    WizTree Flops

I downloaded and installed the free version of WizTree from Download WizTree. My Bitdefender, which is a very fussy anti-malware app, saw no problem on the site. DL and install were very quick and it analyzed my disks very rapidly.

On disk D it found a large array of data including the folders of interest. I made sure to open the app with administrator privileges and used the app to make sure the read-only attribute was removed from the entire array.

When I tried using the WizTree menu to delete the various folders of interest, I got exactly the same results as before: "You require administrator permission...". So, no joy from this app as of yet. Below is what it shows me:

    "You require administrator permission..."
    That's different from 'access denied'...

Interesting. When you ran Wiztree, did you get a UAC prompt, or do you have UAC turned off?
And is your account an admin account?

Could be quicker to transfer the data to a new disk and reformat this one.

    Huh?

I don't know what UAC means.

And is your account an admin account?
    Yes.

    How nice!

Well, there's over 400 GB of data on the disk...

    Google - search for e.g.

    What is UAC
and you might find out..... User Access Control.

    Or search the Tutorial section:

Question remains... are you using admin permissions as per my post? Assumng above refers to using Wiztree..

And there would be no permission issues if you deleted items with Windows offline as I mentioned much earlier..

Sorry to be unclear. I have consistently used Administrator privileges whenever possible since the beginning of this discussion.

As for your second suggestion, can you refer me to a guide for how to "take Windows offline" to delete items?

Did you try to enable the system Administrator again and with Wiztree find the files to delete? Remember, system administrator is so powerful that can do almost everything, that is why it remains disabled.

I can only guess you did get a UAC prompt when you ran Wiztree (an annoying popup you have to click before the prog runs) as you didn't know what UAC is.

Basic idea- if Windows isn't running, no permissions (in general) apply.

So- access the disk when Windows isn't running.
    I think I suggested above
    - boot to a command prompt
    or
    - create a live boot disk (familiar Win 10 environment or Linux), boot PC from that

    As for permissions, try
PowerRun v1.6 (Run with highest privileges)

    - That lets you run something with the highest permissions possible.

    BEWARE.
