    Stuck on restart

    Hi all

Quite a few times now my PC starts to get stuck on restart and I have to hold the power button to restart, when this happens i also notice that if I delete a file on the desktop the icon stays there but if I click on the icon the file can not be found.

I have reinstalled windows many times now to fix this but still comes back eventually.

Any ideas much appreciated, Thank you.

Tried this? How do I get rid of an icon on my desktop that won't delete?
How to Remove Unused Icons from the Windows Desktop
    Windows 8 and 10

You must right-click an empty space on the desktop. In the left navigation menu, click Themes. On the right side of the Themes settings window, under Related Settings, click the Desktop icon settings option. Uncheck the box next to the desktop icon(s) you want to remove, click Apply, and click OK.

Hi, Your PC doesn't seem that old- from around 2018 on?.

    Have you checked
    - to see if there's a BIOS/UEFI update?
    - your disk(s) - e.g. with Hard Disk Sentinel (excellent- full functional trial, SSDs too)?
I've even seen that comment on disk cables...

You could also try stress tests to see if those show anything.

    Possibly your CMOS battery.

    Just a comment FWIW:

i also notice that if I delete a file on the desktop the icon stays there but if I click on the icon the file can not be found.
That's a refresh issue which unfortunately a good number of people have reported and for which there's no fix as far as I know. It's not likely to be related to your problem restarting.

    Is your drive a Legacy_MBR or UEFI-GPT?

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart

Back to Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    sfc /scannow

If it finds any corrupted files, fixing or not, reboot and run again

Maybe it is getting stuck by an startup program.
Find out what do it loads on startup by running msconfig.exe
Try to disable all startup programs.
    Then run
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    and
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
