    Intro and SNAP frustration

Hello all! I couldn't figure out how to post in the introduction thread so I'll post here. Thank you for making this site and its info available. I recently switched to Win 10 from Win 7 and am having many problems. I'll start with just one and hope someone here has a solution:
I have turned off Snap in all the usual settings: Intro and SNAP frustration-snap1.pngIntro and SNAP frustration-snap2.pngIntro and SNAP frustration-snap3.pngIntro and SNAP frustration-snap4.png
Despite all these settings, win10 still maximizes the window whenever I move it against the edge of the screen or taskbar. This is a big problem for me because I have chronic neck pain and having to look up to the top of the screen is painful, so I always keep my windows filling only the bottom 2/3 of the screen (when Windows will let me).
After the settings changes didn't work, I tried various changes to the registry, but can't specify what they were (desperation ruled). None of them worked.
    Using Win10 Pro, version 22H2
Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to tenforums. Having seen this sort of question here before and noting you have a DELL, could it be

    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/e...isplay-manager

    that is responsible?

    Application Windows Snap
Application Windows Snap helps you with placing a program quickly to any screen. When enabled in Dell Display Manager 2.x, dragging the application window triggers a floating menu that contains recently used Easy Arrange layouts. You can drop the application to any of the listed layouts to perform window placement.
(Hint- searching tenforums and using it as a resource can sometimes be helpful)

Also came across this on a DELL (probably not relevant to you?)

    Hi Dalchina,
Thanks for the reply. I have a Dell cpu but not a Dell monitor (it's an Emprex, using a generic windows driver), and as far as I can tell I don't have the Dell Display Mgr. (I say "as far as I can tell," because my other big problem is that SEARCH doesn't work on this computer!) But it's not listed in apps (settings) or Programs/Features (control panel).
There is an Intel HD Graphics Control Panel which has display settings, but if there's something here that would affect the snap issue I don't know what it is - the meaning of the scaling options are beyond my knowledge:

(You see a link for Advanced settings, but when I click on it, it says my monitor doesn't support any advanced settings.)
I will search the forums here further (I got here from a web search) but I'm losing hope...
    Thanks for trying!

Your specs say Dell Optiplex 7010

Is that the PC in question?

    Please also see:
Turn On or Off Snap Windows in Windows 10
How to Enable or Disable Drag to Snap Windows in Windows 10

If still no luck please try a clean boot (Google or see tenforums Tutorial if unsure how). The idea is to eliminate 3rd party programs as a possible cause.

SEARCH doesn't work on this computer
Many possible causes- depends what you're experiencing and how you are searching and how you have it configured. Separate question.

Yes, it's the Optiplex 7010. I had already seen those tutorials, and had done the registry edits recommended:

which didn't work. I didn't download the files provided because it looked like maybe they were just going to do the registry edits I already did. If not, I will try those.
    Many thanks for your help!
(I will do a separate post later on the search problem.)

You will have noticed that Option 3 (regedit) requires log out/in or restart.

I find that using Settings also requires this.

You might like to try Winaero's tweaker:

    Look at the explanation:
Disable snapping in Windows 10 but keep other extended window management options

Option 2 (using the tweaker) - no restart or logoff required. It works when I try it.

I took another look at How to Enable or Disable Drag to Snap Windows in Windows 10 and realized I missed changing the DockMoving setting in the registry. I went in and changed that, as well as a couple of drag settings I hadn't previously noticed, to zero: Intro and SNAP frustration-snap8.png
and (fingers crossed!), it seems to have finally worked! Leave it to Microsoft to make it so complicated.
Thank you so much for all your help, Dalchina!

Glad it worked out. By comparison, I can disable/enable Snap quite readily.. no fiddling with the registry needed...

Inexplicable - different version, maybe. I'm envious! ;-)
