    What is Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller?

Do I need it? If not can I get rid of it?

    Thank you.

Why bother - does it take up any significant space, or use significan resources?

Windows is full of these sorts of tools - you never know when you might need it. History is littered with carnage of people who removed things and then found they could not reinstate them when needed.

DesktopAppInstaller allows you to install downloaded UWP ("Store app") packages by double-clicking the file in Explorer. It also includes the winget package manager. If you have never done either, or exclusively use the Store app then it can be removed.

    To remove it as Administrator:
    Code:
    powershell "get-appxpackage *DesktopApp* | remove-appxpackage"
You can re-install it from Store as App Installer.

As a side note, Windows Update will refresh your (pre-installed) Windows Desktop or Store apps in the background. Some users don't like the surprise of having their app versions changed w/o asking.

If you want to prevent this behavior, follow:

As I never use the Store, it's just another piece of Windows bloatware not asked for.

Unfortunately, Powershell options for app removal are superficial (outta sight, outta mind) so I use RevoUninstaller > Windows apps (tab) to rid me of these meddlesome beasts (with apologies to Henry II)
