I do miss the ease of accessing favorites and recent documents.

The quick access and recent items folders (I pinned tiles to start menu) is a screwy work around.
What they did for Win 10 has the feel of re-doing it from scratch without knowing what went before.

Is there a 3rd party app that does not totally grab system resources?

    Thank you.

Hi, there are several possibilities. I've posted these before.
    1. Free/shareware (free functionality is good); Listary - does a number of things, including offering favourite/recent and more if you middle click on a f. explorer/File Save/Open dialogue

Also available by left clicking tray icon.
    Functions configurable in its settings.

    2. Title bar buttons.
For frequent and recent folders I only now know of a licensed option: Actual Window Manager or one of its cheaper subsets.

The folders etc appear in a drop-down when you click the button.

    3. Qttabar (free) - extension to f. explorer.
Offers Recent Files, not favourites. (Also tabs in explorer, appearance options and more).

The good thing about using one of (1) or (2) is it's common across a whole lot of dialogues- not just f.explorer - but not 100% as 3rd party programs may provide different save as/open dialogues.

There's also the quick launch toolbar:
Add or Remove Quick Launch toolbar in Windows 10
And you can create taskbar toolbars by dragging a folder to the toolbar, hence favourites.

The Open Shell start menu (free) can also provide access to Recent and Favourites:
