Yo, my dad wanted to give me his laptop but we have a problem

The problem is that a company gave him laptop which means that there are gonna be some company restrictions and other stuff that alerts the company that youre messing around with the laptop. We were gonna try to reinstall windows on it but hes afraid that the company might get alerted and trace us, Any help?

If the company truly gave him the laptop, then it's his to do with as he pleases and it would be very poor decision to leave it as is (with various restrictions in place). It should be completely wiped clean with a fresh install of whatever OS you want (and is appropriate for that hardware). But why would he be afraid of being "traced" if the computer belongs to him? That statement makes it sound like the machine belongs to the company and should be returned.

Well, he said it was last given to him in september and its been here unused for more than a year so i think were good to install a brand new OS?

Also, he said he doesnt work at the company anymore.

If he has any doubt as to if he has been given the laptop. He should contact the companies Legal or IT dept ( preferably legal). Speak to someone in management of that dept. Apprise them of the situation and see what they tell you.

Depending on the age of the Laptop or his position in the company. They may want it back, or just tell Him to keep it. II told to keep it get that in writing (email is fine).

Lots of IT Dept use tracking software for computers and other device that report once the device is on the internet. Hardware based trackers are not common but do exist these are built in the device and are chip based.

Well if he left the company like you mention they would of asked for it back when he left if they wanted it. Just reinstall windows on it and enjoy the free laptop.
