Keeps changing default icon view when I don't want it

I tried searching in the tutorials about this but I'm probably using the wrong terminology for the search.

When I open up Explorer, it keeps defaulting to Large Icons instead of the Details view that I want.

Keeps changing default icon view when I don't want it-icon-mode.png

The picture shows it's on the "Details" view, which is where I want it by default, but it keeps switching back to "Large Icons" view whenever I open or close Explorer.

How do I get it to stop? Thanks

Have you set the default view for certain folder types at any time?

There's also a tool called Winsetview that does that- have you ever used that?

Yes, how would that affect it?

No, not that I know of.

How would I do that so it would stick to that particular folder?

Never heard of it. Do you use it? Is it any good?

    Thanks

You may have hit the default 5000 saved views limit. You can increase that limit, but IMO, it's better to clear the views and set your preferred defaults. That's more reliable and may even improve performance. There are manual ways to do that, but I recommend using WinSetView. I wrote it, but it's completely free, so there's nothing in it for me. Hello @LesFerch,

I have just looked at your linked page. The software looks like it will do what I have been meaning to do for a long time, which is sort out my folders views.

Just a couple of points that might be useful to add.

    - Show a screenshot of the . . .

You can always run WinSetView again to change any settings and you can revert back to a previous state using the Restore button.

    - Maybe provide, if available, a link or list of the File Explorer Default Settings.

I know how long these programs take to write and the time and effort it takes for testing etc, so thank you for sharing it with us, and especially providing it FREE. I think I can thank you on behalf of everyone here.

    EDIT:

I just found this for the second point above > Reset Folder View Settings to Default in Windows 10

Those options are explained in more detail in the complete user's manual (linked to at both the top and bottom of the quick start guide). I'm trying to avoid making the quick start guide any longer. Please let me know if the explanations in the complete user's manual need further detail. Thanks!

I've done that in the form of a sample settings (INI) file. You can load it using the "Load Settings" button available with the Advanced interface. The file name is "Win10-Microsoft-Defaults.ini" (it's also applicable to Windows 11).

What does the 500 views apply to?

I've used that before (forgot the name, eariler) but it messed with the Program file folders and the roaming profile folders default views I had in there already so I wound up uninstalling it.

I specifically want to have it switch Details view to the libraries folders (Video and Audio) and leave everything else the way it is by default. If there are further folders I want to change the view, then I'll deal with them later.
