I'm impressed that Windows was apparently smart enough to read the battery level on the UPS, even I wasn't running the APC powerchute application. This UPS has a data cable with a USB connection to my system. Conclusion: I don't really need to install powerchute.

My setup includes an APC 1350 UPS. This afternoon, it was making a terrific beeping racket that persisted even when I shut down everything connected to it. Huh? So I fiddled with the button on the face of the UPS until the beeping stopped. The LCD panel showed the battery at about 20%. No, I can't understand what happened, since we did not have a blackout today, but I'm happy that the beeping stopped.

After I booted up my desktop system, I noticed that the battery icon on the bottom taskbar showed the battery at 20% charge. That was a few hours ago. Now it's up to 40%.
