    Rearrange Buttons on Taskbar?

    Windows 10 22H2

I've forgotten how to rearrange the buttons on my taskbar. My laptop is dying so I've switched to my PC, which has the taskbar buttons in a different order than I'm used to seeing them on my old laptop. So I thought I could just left-click on a button and then drag and drop it to the left or to the right. But the buttons just don't budge.

I googled for help and found similar instructions:

How do I move the taskbar buttons in Windows 10?

If you don't like the placement of the icons on the Taskbar, you can easily move them. Just press down on an icon with your mouse (or finger on a touch-screen device) and drag it to the left or right. Release when the icon is in your new preferred spot.
What's the trick to dislodging these stubborn critters?

Left click or double click drag & drop should work

Wasn't there a setting in Windows 10 that locks the Taskbar? Or am I just dreaming?

Thanks, Steve, for that speedy reply.

I just solved the mystery: I was expecting to see some kind of change in the appearance of the button when I clicked on it, and also to see an image of the button move along the task bar as I dragged left or right. Like what you see when you when you click on a shortcut on your desktop and drag it to a different location on the desktop.

But just now, as I was trying again to move the buttons around I realized that the process is invisible until you release the mouse button. Duh!

Thanks for encouraging me to persist in trying to make it work.

The Taskbar is kind of a Fluid thing, therefore I never lock mine.
However due to limited real estate on a laptop Desktop, I've found that hiding the task bar gives my programs more space.

Aha! I think I figured out why why my installation behaves differently. I noticed on the Start button an icon of a blue seashell. And that reminded me that years ago I had installed a program that modifies the Windows 10 interface to make it look and feel more like earlier versions of Windows. Just now I right clicked on the Start button and got a popup menu with the heading "Open-Shell Menu." Digging further I also found that I had installed an app called "Taskbar Tweaker." So I suspect I have found the culprit.

I have Open Shell installed too... so simply installing that has no effect. It does have settings that affect the taskbar though, so might be one of those I suppose.

    Likewise 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
