You have no idea what a SSD can improve your computer.
What is your Asus MB model?

Can't remember the MB model but I remember checking a year or so ago and found that I could fit a sata ssd - currently have 3 western digital caviar blues - did have 4 but 1 drive failed after a house move!

If I get a new pc I'll go all out with NVMe drives as read speed is vital for audio work.

I asked because some Z97 has a M.2 slot that can hold a NVMe drive.
Run System Information (%windir%\system32\msinfo32.exe) to find out.

[I just read the first post]

Try a System Restore if you haven't tried that yet. If that doesn't work, go here:
    Just a moment...
Do all the first steps going up until you reach the System Restore method, which we tried first.

See if any of those work out.

It wouldn't allow me to do a system restore unfortunately but I'm going to sort out a USB boot disk today
