Denis - I have now tried the '-' editing method.
I have not bothered to try and 'run' the edited reg file, because I've discovered that the 'phrase' I want to eliminate from the registry, occurs in numerous places of that reg file in lines that do NOT start with '[', but with 'CAL'. Just deleting lines captured those latter entries as well, but putting a '-' does NOT deal with those numerous residual occurrences.
I'm now totally at a loss. WinPe did not keep its promise, and now PowerRun can not be expected to do the job either.
I suppose I am trying to replace a 'hive', so if that is not relevant, do you know of another way that I can delete unwanted, but resistant, keys from a registry ?
Tomdsr - re-installing Windows MIGHT fix the problem, but at the cost of many years of tweaking this that and the other thing in the system. I'm NOT prepared to sacrifice all that for getting a scanner to work again.
Try 3 : I do not have a firm grasp of the distinction between hive and key.
