icon limits

Hello -
I have a folder on my desktop, inside are approx. 180 shortcuts to files and folders spread across 3 HDD's.
It seems they are not cached because it takes about 30 seconds to show properly and I can hear the HDD's
churning away as these icons are reloaded.
This shortcut folder is left in "list" view, if that makes any difference.
The posted fixes to iconcache and similar have not helped.

I see this in Windows Explorer. There are quite a few items @ 1024 KB. Have these items reached their limit?

Just a couple of observations really rather than an answer if I understand you correctly. If the icons are custom icons that you have setup . . .

- I personally would have setup three shortcut folders, one for each of the disks. I would also insure that the icons are as descriptive as possible. This would make maintenance and troubleshooting a lot easier if the occasion should arise. Additionally, if you were to lose one folder, you would still have the other two folders intact !

- Because the icons folder is collating information from three disks, it will take a bit of time.

Interesting idea. Most of the shortcuts are to portable installs, mostly video and audio related programs,
the shortcut named to identify the program they point to.
Shouldn't these icons be cached and load either from those items above or iconcache.db at
user\appdata\local ?
Perhaps I should be setting "view" to small icons vs. "list"

Others have seen the same delays in folders full of shortcuts.
MD insists on checking each shortcut in a particular sub-folder before displaying the folder [mngerhold post #21] - TenForum

Does clearing, and rebuilding, the icon cache help?

Actually no it does not. As I mentioned above, I have set the view type to small icons rather than list, so I will see if
it makes any difference.

I have added an excusion for the folder, I was hoping it would quash any issues like that

Right click and turn off the "type" column. I have the same problem in folders with many files and a "type" column in evidence.

Hello -
unless I'm misunderstanding you, there is no "type" column as I'm not using "details" view -
I'm using "small icons" view/sort by name

I'm just going by your screenshot. I see a type column.
Maybe try this.... put it in Details view, disable the type column, then put it back in the view you desire.

OK, I've tried it. Deleted the "type" column and reverted to one of the other views.
I will now observe; usually the problem is most obvious after the first opening of the folder once PC is booted up
