I've tried MP3tag, Media Tagger, and TagScanner without much luck, so I'm wondering if there is a better program to use to update metadata (artist, album, etc.) from a file. Surprisingly to me, these programs didn't do a match on the file name to update the various other fields. Is there a free program that works well to update metadata?

    Thanks for any suggestions.
I use Tagscanner and find it effective. I use MP3Test to check for errors or MP3Diags for a more thorough test. You can edit the metadata in iTunes also.

As stated, if online sources don't find you metadata, then you will have to manually type in the various song titles and other information...
Why type anything manually when software can read the data from the MP3 file name and/or file path and write it to the tag fields? As noted, both Tag&Rename and TagScanner can do that. Apparently the OP originally tried TagScanner and didn't have success, but, on a second try, did get the desired result.

Why else would you type something manually? Its not always accurate that is why the OP solved their issue so we are all just talking hot air now anyway.

Maybe I was unclear. I was trying to ensure that future visitors to this thread don't get the idea that they have to manually type in the MP3 tag details when those details are already available in the MP3 file name and/or file path.

The OP ultimately used TagScanner to automatically tag their MP3s from the file names, even though the opening question suggested that TagScanner could not do that.

    Case closed.
