Unfortunately I couldn't get a new user account created so I ended up resetting the tablet with the keep files option via the Advanced Boot Options screen. Everything is back working as it should. My original files were saved and I was able to raid the Windows.old folder for my browser bookmarks and a few other configuration files so I am no worse off, apart from losing a few hours getting it sorted. Thanks for all your help!

Good - points to the need to ensure you have appropriate backups should the worst happen- not just personal files, but disk imaging too. Some data or settings are hard to obtain from offline configurations of course.
