Symbolic Links - Can they be used locally?

Hello! I am trying to figure out what I want to do is even possible, my Google-Fu is apparently weak. >.< I want to be able to access the same folders from two different locations. For example, I sorted my music out into two different general genres, but some of it matches both genres. But to have two completely same copies of that music in both folders would be madness and wasteful of drive space. So I want to put it into one folder and Symlink it in the other so it references to the copy in the first folder. All I am finding on Symlinks is for networking, to create a local folder for a network share. Not what I want to do, which is to use Symlinks to reference a local resource but that's somewhere else on the drive. So...

    D:\My Music\Industrial\Rob Zombie
    D:\My Music\Rock & Metal\Rob Zombie -> D:\My Music\Industrial\Rob Zombie

Can stuff like this be done and if so is there an idiots guide to how? Thank you for your time.

    Hello lloyd,

Yes, you sure can use symbolic links locally. Here's a tutorial below to help for now. Please let us know if you have any questions.

And do consider the alternative of just using your music file properties to achieve the scheme you want instead.

For example, you can view music by Genre in WMP & many other media players so you could assign two Genres to the relevant tracks.
    e.g. assign Genres
    Industrial
    &
    Rock & Metal
    to your
    Rob Zombie
    tracks.

When you look in WMP by Genre for Industrial then Rob Zombie will be listed & can be played.
When you look in WMP by Genre for Rock & Metal then Rob Zombie will be listed & can be played.

You can assign Genres & other properties within WMP but I find it easier to assign them in File explorer.

    All the best,
    Denis

Note that the the solution Denis suggested will work on many different devices. The symbolic linked folders is a Windows only solution.
