You can't change the default view for all phones, tablets etc. with the one exception that WinSetView provides. That is, you can change the default Tiles view to instead be the your General items view (e.g. List, Details, Icons).

However, if you set the view for your DCIM folder to the view you like, it should be saved to the Windows registry and open the same way on that same computer in the future. To get the view you want:

    1. Open the DCIM folder
    2. Initially set the view to Details
    3. Click the Date modified column heading to set the sort order
    4. Select Large Icons view
    5. Close the folder (this makes Explorer save the view)

That's it. The next time you connect the phone, that folder should open up in the same view. Let us know if that works.

Note: You don't really have to first pick Details view. You can also right-click in the white space and select your "Sort by" preference.
did not work, the dcim had large icons but then the camera section had smaller icons and the sort order was the same. so maybe if i do that in the camera page it may save that. but you would think it would save it in the last page when you make the changes or are you saying in the lesferch app to do this? i was in that app yesterday and all i got was large icons but never got the sort order in the file explorer if that is what you call that page that opens when the phone is connected to the pc.

Okay, I read through the other thread and see that the main issue is that the sort order isn't sticking with one phone , but is with another. That is odd.

I just tested with my Pixel 3a and all of the view settings I set for the DCIM folder did stick. The only obvious thing that jumps out is that you must CLOSE the folder to make Explorer save your new view preferences.

I will see if I can borrow some other phones and make sure the behavior is the same for all of them.

yes that process works on my older Samsung and the lg aristo and the k20 but not this Samsung a51 phone. i may be the phone doing this but i was hoping that the file explore would over come that and force the setting i wanted to use. i asked on the howard forums in the samsung section and no one has a cue i asked in the samsung forums and the same thing and even toms guide and no one has a fix. so i was hoping that someone would have a way go on into the registry and add a rule to get the phone to show large icons and set the sort order to last photo taken to be the first photo to show in the page.

i did what you said above and the dcim did get larger but i do not need those larger i also did that in the camera page and it made them larger and did change the order of my choices but again i do not need those larger i only need the last page where the photos start showing up to be larger and last taken first to show
    thanks

also this will stay the same if the camera is not taken off the pc. if i leave the camera connected to the ps it comes back with large icons and last photos on top but if i disconnect the camera and connect it again at any time it reverts back to small icons and last photo on the bottom. this may be a phone thing but i have not idea how to go into the phone and change it if it is from the phone.

No, I'm just talking about File Explorer here. WinSetView (aka lesferch app) is out of the equation. It's not going to help (or hurt) here.

As you mentioned in your later reply, the issue is with the view not being saved for the Samsung a51. Since you ran WinSetView, and it completely clears your saved views (BagMRU/Bags) keys, we know that it cannot be caused by hitting the 5000 saved views issue or be caused by some weird corruption in those keys. It seems that the phone (or perhaps the driver for the phone) is causing this issue.

So far, I have been able to test with two Pixel 3a phones. I could go back and forth between them and the view and sort order stuck (I set it differently for each phone to be sure).

I also tried to test with a Moto x4, but, although Windows detected it and the pop-up to select File Transfer appeared on the phone, it would never show up in Explorer. Interesting thing is that after that trouble, the view for my Pixel 3a reverted to default. After resetting that view and only using the two Pixel 3a phones, everything was fine. I mention all this as evidence that not all phones are equal in their behavior in Windows. Next, I'll try to get hold of a Samsung phone...

The only problem is external removable devices like your phone do not have their folder view settings remembered by Windows.
Not necessarily. As I mentioned, I have two Pixel 3a phones set with two different views for the DCIM folder. Those views are remembered, even if I completely shut down the PC.

Yet, the OP's Samsung a51's view is not remembered. I'm now trying to find a phone that exhibits the same behavior, but my extra phones may all be too old.

I tested a Samsung J3 Prime. Again, any view changes I made within DCIM (or DCIM/Camera) were remembered. The only issue I had is that the Camera folder opens by default with properties for Music. I guess the Samsung phone's driver is telling Windows it's a music player as opposed to a camera. No big deal though. I change the displayed properties and it stays that way.

I can get hold of an iPhone tonight, so I'll test that and see if it's view sticks. I may just have to buy a used Samsung a51 on eBay just to satisfy my curiosity (yeah, I really do stuff like that).

Can you clarify what you mean by "last page where the photos start showing up"? A screenshot would help. On all the phones I'm testing, the photos are all inside Internal shared storage\DCIM\Camera. I don't have any photo folders deeper than that. Do you have folders inside the Camera folder? Is there any chance you're looking at a display that's not a File Explorer view, but some other software? Again, a screenshot will confirm. Thanks.

Thanks! We're on the same page then. We're both looking at a File Explorer view of the Camera folder.

The only time I saw that view revert back to default is when I changed the connection option on the phone. In the little pop-up on the Samsung, it gives me the options of "Transfer Files" and "Transfer Images" and in Developer settings, I get the options of "MTP" and "PTP". They all work, but whichever one you pick will be a different device ID and a different saved view in the registry. It all still sticks though. I set one of them to Content view and the other to Medium icons and they both stayed set that way (again, I was sure to close the folder after selecting my preferences). So, I still can't really replicate the issue with the Samsung J3. I may have to buy an a51 and try that. I will not be defeated!

in developer under default usb configuration i have transfer files/android auto then i have usb tethering and the phone does not show under that selection then mdi but the phone will not show up with mdi selected. then i have transferring images and and the phone shows with that selected, the last one is phone charging only. so do i have to turn off developer options then?

under transferring files and transferring images they both do the same ting in the file explorer. i have tried lots of different ways to get this to save. maybe i have to get some app on the phone to make this work? i do not have any options in the camera settings the i can see.
    thanks

ok i do not know if this will hold up for my default but i was in developer options and i went thru all the options nd tried them all and they did not work. so i put it back into transferring files/ android auto mode and then connected the phone back to the pc and navigated to the camera option and then selected large icons and in the sort order picked created and closed it and then disconnected the phone and waited a bit and then connected the phone. this is what i got. if this holds up i will be a very happy camper. now i will save this post and restart the pc and the phone for a fresh take on the settings and see if it returns to this or to the default?

It's perfectly fine to leave Developer Options enabled. It just gives you the option to select the default USB connection mode. The wording is a little different on your a51 vs the j3 I'm testing, but that doesn't really matter. Any option that lets you see the camera folder should be fine and the view set for that mode should be saved to it's own registry entry.

I'm sure you won't find any app to help with this. I think the only hope is for someone else (probably me) being able to replicate the behavior. And then it might be a matter of reporting it to Samsung for a driver update. Not sure. I have to see the problem first. There is no option in Windows to just force the view for devices like phones. It's not even practical to try to capture a BagMRU/Bags saved view and reapply that via a script because those views are indexed incrementally, so you can't really make a discreet save of one view and reapply it.

Patience. I'll keep at it. I don't think you're doing anything wrong because you've confirmed that the view does stick with your other two phones. Feel free to try different combinations of the Developer mode options (only two will work) or the options you get in the drop-down on the phone when you connect. Be sure to close the Explorer window each time to make Explorer save the view. If it keeps reverting to default, then I suggest testing on another computer to be sure the behavior is consistent and the problem isn't something specific to your PC.

Edit: I see you posted an update with encouraging news. I'll standby to see if you got the view to stick.
