Removing utility from rightmouse click menu

    Hello!

I installed an old utility to my right-click menu in Widnows 10 called File2Folder. It allows me to select multiple files and group them into a folder using an option from the right-click. I use it daily. However, I replaced my drive and now m getting an error. Is there a way I can remove it from the right-click menu so I can reinstall it? I can't figure out how to do it as its a shell extension. I searched in the registry but no luck.

LINK TO UTILITY: Download Files 2 Folder - MajorGeeks

    Thanks!
    Nancy

    Hello @nancygail,

    To completely get rid of a program, I use . . .

     Revo Uninstaller - FREE

    About Revo Uninstaller - FREE:

The Uninstaller module is Revo Uninstaller ‘s primary feature for situations when a program won’t uninstall normally or when you have some doubts that a program has not been uninstalled completely.

Also when a program is uninstalled, often times there are multiple files, folders, and/or Registry entries left on your system, which can cause various issues if not removed. This happens more frequently than you might think.

Revo Uninstaller acts as both a replacement and a supplement to the built-in functionality in Windows by first running the built-in uninstaller for the program, and then scanning for leftover data afterwards, making it your best choice when it comes to completely remove stubborn programs, temporary files, and other unnecessary program data that is left behind after the standard uninstall process.

Revo Uninstaller now has the ability to delete Microsoft Apps - under its own Tab.

I find that when uninstalling software, Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ] is excellent. It has an option to Scan for leftover items after the initial uninstall [ using the software own uninstall process if one exists ] using an Advanced Scan option.

    > Website & Download => Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ]

Here is some additional detailed information that is very nicely explaind by our Forum member @idgat; . . .

    > Additional Revo Uninstaller Information.

    I hope this helps.

As mentioned above... reinstall the app, then use REVO (free) to uninstall it, and do REVO's scan for leftovers, too.
When you do REVO's scan for leftovers, it will remove it from the right click menu also.

Then, if desired, you can reinstall the app, and it should work as expected.

Hi, the error message you show does not appear to have anything to do with File2Folder or a redundant context menu entry.
    When does this occur?

According to that, your PC does not have a program installed that can open .pub files.

A PUB file is a document created by Microsoft Publisher, a desktop publishing program used to create professional documents and marketing materials.
Is there a way I can remove it from the right-click menu so I can reinstall it?
May I ask why you believe the presence of a redundant context menu entry prevents you from reinstalling the program?

However, I replaced my drive and now m getting an error
Presumably your system drive... now as you're referring to a leftover, did you clone your O/S to the new drive, restore a disk image.. you can't have clean installed Win 10 as you have something left over.

I had presumed that Revo would be able to identify the "Files 2 Folder" context menu installation and be able to uninstall it.

However, I have just re-tested "Files 2 Folder" (Version1 from the link provided) with Revo free and it could not identify the F2F Context Menu installer. So back to the manual method which seems to work as follows when the original Files2Folder.exe file is missing for any reason.

Download the utility again and extract the contents of the zip to the folder you wish to install it from.
Open a Command Promt as Admin and enter the following command to unregister the F2F context item (Note- use your own path to where you have extracted the zip contents).
    Code:
    "C:\custom\folder\Files2Folder.exe" -u
Then you can re-register it again using the above command without the -u option either from the same Admin Command Box,or running Files2Folder.exe as admin .
    Code:
    "C:\custom\folder\Files2Folder.exe"
Note: testing on a Windows 11 VM required both the commands to "unregister" and "register" to be run as Admin.

This fixed it! Sorry for the delay. I appreciate all the input from everyone. Yeah, it did not show up anywhere which was the problem.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to test this for me. It unregistered it immediately and let me reinstall. I use this thing all the time so I'm very appreciative.

    Have an awesome day!

    dalchina;
If the utility isn't properly registered (tested by moving 'file2folder.exe' out of its original location), that is the kind of message I got for "any" file on which the Context menu "Files 2 Folder" was clicked.

(eg. One of the modes in which the the utility works is by using the clicked file name extensions and creating sub-folders named with those extensions eg. clicking on "example.txt" would create a sub-folder called "txt" and move "example.txt" to the "txt" folder. But, if the file2folder.exe is not correctly registered, the message as shown in the original post would be shown but in this case it would refer to "example txt").

I see: you mean the message arises as a result of attempting to use this program.

That information was not clearly stated in the original post and could only be inferred. Thank you.
