Clicking To Open Any File, Anywhere, Bring Up Only Properties Screen

    Hello,

    Always something new.
Sr. Citizen now, very, and to say that this is driving
me "crazy" is probably an understatement

    Using W10.

For the first time ever, it seems irrespective of what Folders I click on, either on the Desktop,
or elsewhere, all that I can open up is their Properties screen.

The one that has tabs for General, Sharing, Security, Previous Version, and Customize.

And, it seems that all of these have Read Only checked.

What is happening, please ? Virus ?

How can I get back to a normal operation ?

    Much thanks,
    Bob

What happens when you RIGHT click on a folder?

What kind of mouse do you have? Wired or wireless?

Do you have a laptop or a desktop?

In some cases it's possible to change the function of mouse buttons, so the question Ghot asks is relevant.

What sort of mouse are you using- or is it a touchpad?

Note that folders are marked normally as read only. It has no significance.

    Bob,

That is a red herring. File explorer's indicators of folder read-only properties are virtually meaningless.
So you can ignore them during your fault investigation.

    Best of luck,

I suggest that your first step should be to run SFC - Option 3.
    SFC - TenForumsTutorials

If it reports irreparable errors then use the command given in the notes at the end of Option 3 and make sure you are connected to the internet for it [it uses online sources to find replacement files].

If it still reports irreparable errors then post them using the guidance in the tutorial's Option 5.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

A ReBoot is the first thing you should do when having issues
