easiest way to move documents to new laptop

    Another downvote for One drive...

    And be sure to disable/delete it on the new pc BEFORE you transfer any files to it...otherwise the files will get uploaded to the cloud, which would suk if your wife has any personal info on her old machine that she would prefer to keep private...

    Been there, done that, NEVER AGAIN !

    If you can network both laptops, then there are two software utilities that can manage the transfer

    Goodsync
    Beyond Compare

    Both have free eval periods. Goodsync also has a free version. Beyond Compare is easier to use. Once you set up the "jobs" in Goodsync, it all runs automatically until completed, even if you interrupt the copy operation.

    You are not limited to the capacity of a USB drive or network upload/download speeds.
