Well, if it's not installed you cannot select it.

Adding a new display language requires for some reason two separate steps, which I overlooked. I wonder why adding a new display language has to be in two steps. The first step to select a language is obviously necessary but after that what else to be done other than installing it.

Perhaps some people add languages but do not want to alter their display language.

Perhaps you could ask for help / clarification by posting in one of that pair of tutorials.

I had to go the other way round when I found that my display language was US English instead of UK English.
    I found it quite confusing.
If I ever have a language meltdown I'll start off from scratch by clean installing with a UK English ISO-InstallUSB.

    All the best,

I thought that is the way it works. But it does not now. To confirm this I uninstalled US English and now there is no option for US English as the display language and in the preferred language list. Still, I can write in US English as well as in Japanese as 米語を追加しなくでも米語で読み書きできます。The only thing I cannot do without installing it is to switch the display language or the UI language from Japanese to US English.

Yes, sorting out my UK/US issue was also made confusing by the existence of some facilities such as US spell-checking in browsers even though I had never installed anything.
Sad to say, I got so confused that my notes about what I had done were seen to be complete gibberish when I read them again a month later.
If I ever get a recurrence of language problems I'll probably end up just clean installing.

    All the best,
    Denis
