    Just a quick note -

    Laptops depreciate faster than desktops.
Always configure and buy at the highest end of the curve.

Newegg.com is about the easiest way to search for gaming laptops. They have a great navigation system.

Apologies if this thread would be better suited for "pc-custom-builds-overclocking" but I wasn't sure that would be the most appropriate home for my topic.

hello and thank you for taking a look at my thread. I purchased my laptop notebook pc in 2016. The most resource intensive programs I use are Second Life and Zoom as a distant second. My habits haven't changed and i happy with my pc's performance.

Its been 7 years now and I have some spare change so i am considering something new. Please see attached image for my current rig that I spent just under $2,000 for tax included in 2016

What would I spend today for something comparable to my current notebook? And would starting from scratch and dropping 2K get me something insanely better graphics wise and make my experience dramatically better?

the point of this thread is not to ask you to shop or build a pc for me, unless of course you wish to. I am simply trying to get a feeling for the market these days when someone has 2K to spend but really doesn't know if they need to spend that much.

    Thanks!
I'd go to www.tigerdirect.com, Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptops, Gaming Systems, and more - Newegg.com and maybe a few others to check what Refurbished computers are bringing. If done right they should also carry a warranty, my last 2 Notebooks did in 2018 [Dell 13" $149.00] and 2019 [Dell 12" $159.00]. Right after COVID hit used machines started going up in price, probably due to demand by home workers, both of mine nearly doubled. Many refurbs are from companies who leased them and when the contract expired turned them back to the leasing agency/company and then put on the market.

    No different than an auto.

I always buy at the higher end (of specs) so the system by default will last me for at least 5 years.

The question should be - Does your system do what you wish?

    HTH,

I must have chosen well since my last self built desktop PC is now 11 years old and still plays the latest games fine by having a RTX 2060 Super GPU. I'll replace it when either games run too slow or I can't force an upgrade to Windows 11 when Windows 10 is end of life.

The market determines the dollar value of a used computer. Check sold prices of identically-equipped (or as close as you can find) laptops on EBay. That will give you a realistic estimate.

Also compare your laptop to similar machines in Best-Buy's discounted items (40% Off or More). Any used machine you want to sell has to compete with those deals. That's where I look. IMO, paying full retail for a laptop is nuts.

Fun fact: My first computer (Apple II with floppy drive and printer) bought way back in 1981 I think was well over $3000. That's pushing $10,000 in today's dollars. Ouch. I've been much more frugal since then.

    thanks everyone!

i confirmed with Sager that I can not upgrade my GPU so I will consider purchasing something. My last two notebook purcases have both been from A Trusted Brand for Gaming Laptops | Sager Notebooks. my first lasted 8 years and my second bought in 2016 almost 7. I think ill stick with them and am considering one of these
