Booting windows from a usb pen

I created a usb windows 10 boot pen. Using wintousb and a windows iso, it seems work ok? But looks the same as a hdd boot, how can I tell if it’s actually booting from the usb pen ? Thanks

If the USB drive was created from a Windows software it should look the same, Linux LiveUSB does. Open File Manager and see if 2 drives are shown and check the Properties, the internal drive should be larger-capacity than the USB. Also check the Start menu, should be fewer entries for the USB.

I thought booting from a usb pen with W10, would not show my desktop as with a hdd boot, thought it would be like a clean install environment. Created it primarily as a rescue option if windows refused to boot from the internal hdd, or have I misunderstood something thanks

Look at disk management. It will tell you which drive C: is on.

Unless you have your USB as first boot option in BIOS - then you must use F12 when booting up to get into and select the proper Boot Device (USB)

You are not booting into the USB Flash drive if you see your desktop and it's icons.
As stated, if the Windows 10 ISO is burned correctly, the Flash drive must be selected in the F12 one time change of boot order, or moved to First Boot Device in Bios under the Boot Tab. If you successfully booted to the Windows 10 installer, you should see the picture that is attached.
If you still have problems, reburn the ISO using the Media Creation Tool

Did you see the second sentence of the first post where they said they used wintousb? That would indicate their desire was to make a "Windows to go" flash drive which would boot into a Windows desktop.

@reddwarf4ever , Exactly what kind of Windows USB flash drive are you trying to make? The standard flash drive used to install Windows, or a portable Windows installation on a flash drive that actually boots into Windows?
