Trying to move everything from OneDrive so I could cancel my account

So, yea, I was trying to move everything from OneDrive so I could cancel my account, and I don't know if I was actually doing that, and then suddenly most of my desktop icons were gone. I had clicked "quit onedrive" but then I actually upgraded it to 1T storage. My 100 GB were full. OK, so now I see the icons are (probably all) back, but out of order.

Anyway, can someone please walk this old lady through getting out of OneDrive? I've been using computers since 1985 so I like to think I know what I'm doing, but this looks like a deliberate maze to stop people from being able to get free (of OneDrive).

    Thanks in advance!
Oops, OK, I'm using Windows 11 on a year-old HP laptop. I have 568 GB of space left on my HD .

Hi, depends somewhat how you have configured Onedrive.

The basic key is to ensure nothing is synchronised and Onedrive is disabled before you ever consider uninstalling it.
Turn On or Off OneDrive PC Folder Backup Protection in Windows 10
    Enable or Disable OneDrive Integration

Your online account remains there even if you uninstall Onedrive, so your synchronised data should be safe.

Another issue is whether you have more than one device synchronised to the same Onedrive account.

There are many tutorials in the Tutorials section if you care to search there for Onedrive.

Can you log in to your online Onedrive account? (Just to check that).

Files can be set up to be kept on your PC or in your online storage only - this tutorial shows how you can tell which is which:
