I have Power Toys and all the File Explorer settings are on.

I did a reinstall of Foxit Reader, verified that Shell Extensions is selected.

Another weird development, after the upgrade repair I performed a system restore point, today I restored it and still no previews.

Possibly a hardware issue? My Lenovo laptop is 7 years old.

    Some graphic settings perhaps...?
    Bad driver?

Did you try this from inside a link I posted earlier?

After the in-place upgrade repair you reported all was ok bar pdfs.
Windows Explorer Preview now works for everything I want it to except pdf files:
Then you found txt and ini ... had disappeared again.

This suggests something you have running is making changes here

What security software do you use?
Consider any tweak programs, unusual 3rd party programs...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for pdf: what do you see here?

If nothing in the right pane, return to what I said last about how you set a preview handler for a file type- where such a handler is available, of course.

Foxit appears to offer 2 preview handlers, one labelled (XP). (My version is 12.0.0.12394

Here you can see the registered handlers:

(That's this PC with no Foxit reader installed)

    See post #38.

I use Windows defender and run the free version of Malwarebytes once a week. I use a program called "Synergy" but turned it off, no improvements and I have "Everything" running, both programs have been with me for a long time - no newly added third party software.

    Change your pdf handler to
    Microsoft PDF Previewer

    and retry.

But as I said, - the in-place upgrade repair fixed about 3 things- and then SOMETHING broke them.

You need to find out what that is.

Try creating a new user for test purposes; log in as that user.
    Any change?

No, although I didn't install foxit reader.

As stated, you need to find out what is making a change to your registry- it seems something is.

That's got to be something unusual. I have no more ideas. Thank you for your attention.

As an alternative you could of course consider File Viewer Plus 4..
