Thanks. Hmm, this is a guess.. it depends exactly what features this covers for each extension in the registry, but it won't do any harm.

Try Option 2 for the missing file types only:
Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

    Note this step afterwards:
5 Sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

Begs the question of what happened to cause this... perhaps a simpler approach would be to use a System Restore point if you have one created recently when you knew all was well...
Sorry, tried it and it didn't work and I don't have a system restore point.

    You may didn't tried this?

In the registry (for Windows home)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
create a NoReadingPane DWORD32 with value to 1.

EXIT Registry and restart Windows explorer. (..or may you need a PC restart.)
Then open Registry and delete NoReadingPane DWORD32 with value to 1.
    Restart Windows explorer.

Thanks. Please create a new user account for test purposes (you can delete it afterwards).

See if the same problem exists. If it does, an in-place upgrade repair install may fix this (it keeps all progs and data like any upgrade.

It seems some registry data has been changed for certain file types, but as I showed above, this is a complex feature in the registry.

@NTN - it's not a problem of the entire preview pane as you are suggesting- this is file type specific.

....or go through the whole list.
Option 9, run a sfc scan, which found some problems:

    And this is the cbs.log:

Which is way over my head.

Looks like I have to create a new Microsoft account to add a new user, is there another way?

No, you can create a local account. Tutorial available. Many have.

Now, given also the SFC failure, you may as well do an in-place upgrade repair install to deal with that.

However, first do a couple of basic checks.

    a. Check your disk.
You can do that with Crystal Diskinfo (free) as basic SMART check.

    b. If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.

If that passes, proceed to the in-place upgrade repair.

    Once again....
Use the MS media creation tool to download an iso file for Win 10.
Rt click iso file, click Mount.
    Open new drive letter created.
    Double click setup.exe

(Yes there's a tutorial, but it looks exceedingly complicated),

While I have this to hand, here's the Preview Config tool should you still have problems after the above:

If all else fails, you can try a program called UVK Killer. It has some features that might fix this. I can show you if you are interested in this. But I'll wait until you say so…

@NTN - I really think you're misunderstanding what's needed here. Malware? Well, I hope not.. but let's try to get the O/S back into an intact state. As I said, the preview pane is stated to work with some file types, but not others.

No, not malware. It is repair.

This is far too specific an issue for a generalised malware and ... everything else tool.. I can't see anything there that would help.
