Most things I need on Linux are free and cross-platform. Some have support for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X [don't know about the newer macOS and their M chips] such as VLC, LibreOffice, etc. But I have salvaged computers, both types and able to do more. I was working on a x86/32-bit WinXP on a Toshiba Notebook today and found it doesn't support exFAT-formatted Thumb drives, FAT32 and NTFS are okay. Now I just need to find an older Dell Notebook to install my Dell-branded 64-bit version of Windows XP on.

You could dual boot with Windows 11.

Would this work with Windows 10 22H2.
Recently decided to upgrade an old HP laptop from the days of XP.
But cannot install 22H2 from Win 10 v1709. It downloads and installs, then during the actual setting etc. BSOD comes up with stopcode: system thread exception not handled.
Tried many ways to overcome this without success. Tried getting to event manager to find the process error, but windows unwinds itself back to previous version, not giving me a chance to see the event error to try and solve the issue. Can only assume a driver is too old for 22H2. 
Several others also found that they could not update their old WinXP computers beyond Windows 10 Version 1709.

Amazing how similar it looks to Windows.

@Try3 I'd wonder if that would also apply to the 64-bit Pro version of WinXP. A have a Toshiba Notebook I could use to try but it won't accept the Dell-branded disc I have, doesn't match.

Iḿ leaving Windows 10 (and this nice forum) because I have decided to install ZORIN OS over it. Sorry guys, but as the end of 10 is coming, I decided early to throw the windows towel in the ring and decided to go open-source!
The end of Windows 10 is not coming until October 2025 - in another 2 years 9 months.

A fake Rolex may look like a real Rolex but it is only a superficial resemblance.

It is what is under the hood that counts. In the end, it is just another boring Linux distro with all the major disadvantages of inability to run major packages like MS Office.

Remember the fiasco when a German Federal state decided to boycott Windows in its public governing body, and after a few months reverted back to Windows after admitting it just did not work.

So, for anybody going down this route, enjoy your fake black velvet drink with a stout and sparkling wine. I will continue to enjoy a genuine black velvet using guinness and real champagne.

Linux is a great OS. It is fast, safe and free.
It is just different, not only on the way it looks but mainly on how it works.
And for Linux there are more than one free Office alternative. And you will find a free Linux alternative for almost every Windows application. Not so elaborated or sophisticated, but for general public, it works.
Have seen many high skilled Windows gurus that left windows for Linux and don't regret.
Windows isn't the most used OS. Not any more. Android is.
Windows isn't considered the best OS. MAC OS is.

For me the best software is the one I know how to use it.
