Should display wake up overnight when a program runs?

I have my Dell U2415 24" monitor set to sleep after 10 minutes of non-use, and that seems to work OK. However in the small hours I've noticed recently that the screen is on. I haven't so far got out of bed to investigate, but wonder if it's because I have various backups running overnight?

    Hello @Terrypin,

Yes, some devices allow the computer to Wake, and the knock on affect is that the Monitor / Screen will become active.

    As a start, Have a look at this . . .

    > See Devices able to Wake Computer in Windows 10

Also, have a look at the Related Tutorials at the BOTTOM of the above Tutorial [ there are a few ], as they may also be related and give further information.

    Additionally, have a look at this . . .

    > How to See Wake Source in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

Just turn it off or just the monitor if it wakes you up.

    Hello @Terrypin,

I also have a Script extract from my PROJECT: Computer Report - Comprehensive in my signature if you are interested that outputs all the different commands from PowerCFG that I can post if you are interested.

Just add a argument to keep the monitor off during those tasks.

    Thanks all.

I should have mentioned why I'm not using that most obvious approach. (Which I assume DOES keep the
monitor black until I start again in the morning. So far no evidence to the contrary. Even though I know it doesn't cut off all mains power, just 75W down to 0.5W 'standby'.)

This was going to be another imminent post. But, briefly: if I switch the Dell off (push button bottom right corner), when I switch back on the next morning my screen layout is screwed up. All my carefully organised windows (folders and apps) are resized smaller vertically. Looks like a factor of 0.63. Have yet to fathom it, but must be some kind of aspect ratio issue. The Dell is 1920 x 1200, an AR of 1.6, and that's what it's set to (as recommended). So typically 5-15 windows need individually fixing if I do that.

It's taken me a while to conclude that it's not down to Dell's Window Manager. DWM is now uninstalled but the start-up layout change persists.

Tonight I'm going to use the TOM setting: towel over monitor ;-)

Don't let TOM cover any air vents.

    Good point, thanks!

Although I covered the new AR issue above, I’ll start a separate thread today.

I agree with the first link in Paul's first reply:

Should display wake up overnight when a program runs?-image.png

I have this little info in my little "Windows Installation" notes text file, whenever (hopefully never again) I need to reinstall my computer all from scratch. So many things I have in there to make my computer set up to be configured the way it is like it is right now.

Before it said "NONE", I had my computer's monitor turning on at random times when it's idle.

So far after the "NONE" setting, the monitor stays off until I physically want to use the computer again.

(...try this method out, and see if it fixes the problem. Then you can tell your buddy ol' pal TOM that he can take a break from covering the light from your monitor and he can go home.)
