    Help: Searching in File Explorer

    Greetings to all:
I am new to windows 10 and earlier I used Windows 7.
In file explorer (Windows explorer) in windows 7, it starts to search when I start to type text in search bar, even before I hit enter.
But in windows 10, file explorer starts to search after I hit enter (By default??)
But I need that, File explorer should start search when I start to type text in text bar like in windows 7.
    How can I do it?
Thank you all. Happy X Mas...

Hi, welcome to tenforums. MS changed search behaviour after build 1903 - for the worse.

Fortunately you can revert to how it was with this tweak:

Winaero's tweaker is free, and is excellent- normally with full explanations.
A good many of the tweaks described in some of the many tenforums tutorials can be carried out easily with this.

Once done, you will find correct search syntax is again highlighted in blue, and the drop-downs under the search box reappear.

Most queries about search result in people recommending one or other free 3rd party search tool. These certainly have their place, but such a comment will fail to address your query.

I just noticed today that disabling UAC also has the interesting side-effect of enabling classic search. Weird.

Obviously, using Winaero Tweaker to enable classic search, and leaving UAC enabled, is going to be the better choice for most users.

Another interesting thing is that Windows 11 brings back the classic search behavior of showing results without having to press Enter. Given all the bugs in Windows 11 File Explorer, I have to wonder if that was intentional or by accident.

Now that Microsoft has reverted Windows 10 Explorer search back to the way it was in build 1903 and earlier, do we call the current search "classic search"? If we do, then what do we call the search we had from 2019 to 2023? We used to call it something like "new search", but now, if I refer to "classic search" or "new search" nobody can really be sure what I mean. Ugh.

Many might be relatively oblivious to the difference! And many were thoroughly disenchanted with W. search in the mess MS made of updates in introducing "new search" or whatever it is - or was (!). That's if they hadn't automatically discounted it with memories of search in XP in mind...

Just a side-effect of MS's inconsistent policy... a bit like the T party in Britain. Keep taking the pills...

    History provides us the answer:
Coke -> New Coke -> Coke Classic
