The best way to achieve what you want is look at making a slim version of windows with tools like MSMG toolbox or NTLite or a combination of the two.
Or perhaps Windows ADK to remove bloatware.

Rather than attributing slow booting to 'Windows bloatware' - consider..

.. this 8 year old t440s laptop with SSD running Windows with about 300 programs installed

does a cold boot to lock screen in about 8s. 5s if Fast startup is enabled.

I've just kept upgrading it from about build 1803- done nothing special.

Thanks all for responding. Plan to spend part of this weekend going through suggested comments.

I mirror (clone) my HDD using Clonezilla. Been around for years and still works great. AFAIK, image files are a PITA.
Cloning one's drive(s) makes an easy swap out unless the MOBO goes bad.

Really surprised at the performance difference of the SDD versus HDD. Haven't measured yet but I'm guess my boot time as I defined it is running around 3 plus minutes.

Clonezilla will work with SSDs just as it does with HDDs.

I do not share your dislike of system images.
It's up to you what you do.
I have recent system images saved to my pair of backup drives and could choose to restore to any one of them if problems appeared or OS disks failed.
I do not have the shoebox full of spare disks necessary to let me do this using cloning.

    All the best,

Wanted to report back after my testing.
My boot time from TURN-ON to NORMAL MOUSE ranged from 1 minute 45 seconds (2nd time) and 2 minutes 30 seconds (first time)
The first time was after cloning where the MOBO was involved and rewriting the OS info.
So 1 minute 45 seconds isn't as bad as I thought given dalchina HDD value of around 3 minutes 30 seconds.
Already had set unused Services to Manual, so not of concern and AutoRuns was already clean.
I do have a number of icons on my desktop, which I need to look at, but besides that I guess I'm at a point
where putting the OS on an SDD may be the best solution if I want to increase boot times.
Thanks for every ones input and hope this thread may help others.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL WHERE EVER YOU ARE

It will be shorter with a HDD especially if you have Fast Startup on... and times vary with hardware too.

    Indeed- a happy Christmas.

(Using a SDD should reduce boot times )
