Hibernation file keeps allocating 10 GB more, i think we should report

I discovered that i was missing 10 GB of hard disk space on my SSD drive, after a bit of digging and using Storage Sense i found out there was a discrepancy between the allocated file size for the hibernation, which is approximately 6GB and the taken up space which is approx. 16 GB which means 10 GB are "gone" or so.

As a workaround, i have disabled the hibernation with powercfg /hibernation off then restart then back and i did the /hibernation on.

But then, upon checking storage sense now it says again 16GB approx and the actual file is 6GB however the "other" 10GB haven't disappeared yet.

Just wanted to add that this happened again and again, then do the hibernation on and off trick and correctly accounts for the space left. sometimes i move files and hdd space does not increase, then i remember… oh yeah, that's that…

You don't list any details about your computer. For example, how much memory does your computer have? Bear in mind that the hibernation file must be able to accommodate the entire contents of memory.

I'm also curious where you got the numbers that you are seeing from. If you enable the ability to show hidden system files in File Explorer and you look at C:\hiberfil.sys (the hibernation file), what size is that file?

Also, out of curiosity, are you running really low on disk space where this is a concern? Personally, I simply count this space as the "cost of doing business", but if you really are running that short on space my suggestion would be to consider upgrading to a larger drive or simply disable hibernation altogether to save the space. Unfortunately, that's just the nature of hibernation - it requires storage space in order to temporarily store the contents of RAM.

i have 16 GB of ram, by the way, it just happened again. turned on the PC this morning and another 10GB is gone.

I am NOT running low on space but this is driving me nuts. and i have a 2nd laptop with SAME setup, same windows, this does not happen, only on this one.

Size of the hibernation file is 6.28GB and the allocated space does not match that. That is it's taking 16.28GB as i said a few times in this thread, and this is a mistake. OTHERWISE the hibernation file should be 16.28 GB, so this is a sort of bug or something in my opinion. I've reported already to Micro$.

or i can try the command that forces the resizing of the hibernation file, that i haven't tested, i will do it now.

It just pisses me off hdd space going away, when windows grows unexpectedly, it's like when the bank shaves off your money slowly with nasty monthly fees. same feeling lol.

i've now set it to 40% manually, first disabled it then launched powercfg.exe /hibernate /size 40 and went back to 6.28GB now. GOOD, let's see if it works.

There are two huge system and hidden files: C:\pagefile.sys (virtual memory) and C:\hiberfil.sys (hibernation file).
pagefile.sys can vary from from 20% of memory size to 200% of memory size.
hiberfil.sys is the same size of your memory.

You can disable hibernation (powercfg -h off) and move pagefile.sys to anther drive.

Okay, I think that I understand. I may need to do a little research to confirm this and may not have time to do that until tonight or tomorrow, but I I think that you are simply misunderstanding what this is telling you.

Storage sense says 15.7GB of space because that is how large the Hibernation file can POTENTIALLY become since you have 16GB of RAM. However, in File Explorer it shows as 6.28GB because you were not using all 16GB of RAM the last time the system wrote the contents of RAM to the hibernation file.

My take is that this is probably 100% normal and expected behavior but I'd have to see if I can find something on this in writing.
