Asking a question on the Net

    Hi
I'm not sure where I should go to get an answer to this question.

Every time I ask a question on Google I never get an answer. Instead, I get offered loads of products that have similar wording to the question I asked.

Is there a search engine or a general web page that will answer questions I ask?

    Thanks a lot.

    Fabian.

The key to getting the answer you want out of Google or any other search engine is carefully choosing your search terms. What is your question? Perhaps we could suggest better search terms to use.

I suggest it's a matter of learning the tricks of how to search effectively.

Some of these are intuitive, e.g. incorporate a key word relevant to your search in your search string e.g. translate, etymology... ; others require the use of 'search operators'.

Google does not give answers, but provides links which may give you an answer. In case of many ads, disable tracking cookies.
Try also startpage.com which acts as a middleman betwen you and google.

Sounds like you are seeing targeted ads.

You want to be using an ad blocker extension if you are not currently. This will filter out much tailored ads which sounds like could be part of your problem when you say you are getting lots of targeted ads in your search terms, well this is why most likely.

Adblock Plus | The world's #1 free ad blocker - One of the best has been around for 20 years or so.

uBlock Origin - Free, open-source ad content blocker. One of the best modern ones but is more suited to blocking CSS and also more situated to advanced use case scenarios but can also catch stuff that ABP misses.

Both can work in conjunction and they are both pretty good on autopilot too.

You also want to look at cookie management like you should be blocking all third party cookies and only accepting ones that you allow on a whitelist. Example say there is a website that stores user settings in a cookie that you can tailor so each time you visit that site its structured the same way,
well you would want something like that whitelisted but you want to block all other third party cookies by default its a privacy thing and also a ad thing.

Cookies also effects targeted ads and also your privacy in several ways and your browser can manage this natively.

You will also want to delete all your current cookies which you can do in the settings for your browser.

I would just add that including a keyword to direct your query towards particular discussion web sites can be very useful. For example, including a keyword, such as tenforums, elevenforum, superuser, reddit, quora, and so on, will get you hits from those respective web sites. In the case of tenforums and elevenforum, also include the keyword tutorial to get hits on the many brilliant tutorials available on those sites.

You can if you wish get hits just for one specific site using the site: keyword, such as site:tenforums.com

" .. on Google ... " ? As in Google Chrome browser, Google search engine, or both

Remember, Google get paid for "hits". They're always going to give you what they want to give you, not what you want.

Change your search engine to DuckDuckGo, and also install the DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials add-on

And as @Malneb suggest, install adblockers - Adblock Plus and Ublock Origin are the preferred

And then maybe consider changing your browser - Firefox is a good option (with same add-ons as above)

Google is not the "internet", and it doesn't need to think it is, on your (or anyone else's) device(s)
