    Dell will not start up

Last evening I ran support assist on my Dell laptop. It came up with a "critical" bios update. Since it was termed critical I thought I should do it. Today, system very slow. I tried a restart and then it died. I ran diagnostic on it and of course it says, no problems. Right now I am on trusty Chromebook to see about a fix. It did finally boot to desktop but now sits and nothing else has loaded. I do hope I am not facing another restore thru Macrium. Are there any other solutions? Thanks.

It has booted into system and now desktop is back. I hesitate to try anything as it still isn't right. What should I do now? Please...

Turn it off and back on if it boots properly this time then i would not worry? It could of just been slow that first time since the update but try restarting the PC to see what it does and then we can go from there.

Maybe some more information. How long did it take to finally boot into windows? like was it only a few minutes or had it been sitting for more than 20 minutes before it actually made it to windows?

Maybe even flash the bios manually yourself by using this https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER09110759M/...5570_1.8.1.rcv

You need to put this on a USB and then flash it from inside the BIOS itself. Only saying this as its assumed the issues presented after you did the Bios update. Because you would of ran an exe file through the support tool or what ever convoluted way it did then there is grounds for error. Flash using this method instead as its more reliable.

Hi and thanks. It took about half an hour at least. That was to get to the log-in screen.Clicked on that - another 20 minutes or longer. Each step of the way another 20 minutes or longer. It finally got to the desktop but long time coming. I tried opening my email just now - no deal. It will open explorer but slow. No email opening.

That bios update is the only thing I have done --- I have been working on trying to get my printer set up but don't think that would cause such issues.

It just went to a white screen -- haven't seen that before. Ah, it's trying to open the T-bird email. Sitting. Just sitting.

Does the usb have to be empty?
I have a couple but they have stuff on them. I can dump from one of them. Is it a big file - this bios thing?

Ok yeah that is slow its safe to assume that the bios update did not apply properly but it not 100% accountable because computers, usually a failed bios would mean the computer is bricked or wont post if it even turns on, but considering the context i would just try flash it manually and hopefully it fixes it.

No the USB does not have to be empty but it is better if it was as it makes it easier to find in the menu when looking.

The Bios file will only be small like under a gig maybe a couple hundred MB not sure without trying to download it myself, just look and see.

On a Dell Laptop it is possible to roll back to the previous bios

^ That might be a good option maybe even a better option too and then look up on the Dell website to see if others are reporting problems with the latest Bios as it was only released this month.

Still hard to say though its probably just the EXE thing and DELL OEM shenanigans these OEM systems are usually really convoluted and suck in this regard when doing any sort of updating or support stuff lol.

This is all you are missing out on and does not sound overly "critical" to me even though they put it in red writing lol

    Fixes & Enhancements
    Fixes:
    - Fixed the issue where there is no sound from an external stereo speaker when connected through a dock. This issue occurs when you disable the external USB support option in the BIOS setup.
    - Fixed the issue where the Type-C port of the system does not work after updating the BIOS. This issue occurs when the system is connected to the DA20, DA200, or DA300 dongle through USB or an HDMI cable.
    - Fixed the issue where Reboot Bypass does not work after rebooting the system. This issue occurs when you set Password Bypass from Disable to Reboot Bypass in the BIOS setup menu and install Dell Command Monitor (DCM) version 10.7.0.232.
    - Fixed the issue where multiple Dell logos are displayed on an external monitor. This issue occurs when the system lid is closed and the system is turned on through the external monitor.

    Enhancements:
    - Added the MAC address pass through function for Type-C monitors.
    - Updated the Type-C Dock Override/Audio/Lan option to be unavailable when the Video/Power only on Type-C Ports option is enabled in the BIOS setup.

On the Dell forums, we find it best to manually install a BIOS update rather than through Support Assist. Some later versions of Support Assist will even tell you to install it manually. Installing from Windows is OK.

Thanks, I looked up that bios recovery option and it looks like I am able to use Recovery 1. I'll give it a try.

Is it ok to ignore these bios updates or are they critical as Dell indicated in support assist?

I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks again.

Generally, unless it fixes a problem you have or supports new hardware you are going to install its "optional".

    I have a 5577 same 2017 vintage as the 5570.
