Old digital camera photos do not retain original EXIF data when copied

    Arrgh!

Under Windows XP, 7, 10, etc.

I have many images from my old (circa 2006) Canon PowerShot SD-600 digital camera.
When I copied the file, it erased the *original* date/time and replaced it with the copied time.

    1) Am I basically screwed (for lack of a better descriptive term, lol)?
    2) How can I prevent this in the future - mark read-only?

    Thanks!

How are looking at that time? I just want to be sure you are looking in the correct spot(s). If you right-click the file and choose properties, then go to the details tab, are you looking specifically at the "Date taken" entry?

In addition, in File Explorer, you can choose to view file details, then right click the area to the right of the columns displayed and add a "Date taken" column as in this sequence:

    @hsehestedt -

Yep. The field "Date taken" has the date of the copy.

Hmm, honestly not sure how that happens. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me on the topic can comment.

I thought I could help but I cannot. So please ignore my now-deleted previous post if you were quick enough to see it.

My copying from camera [smartphone] behaves differently from yours.
Old digital camera photos do not retain original EXIF data when copied-folder.png
    - I took a phone screenshot at 15:03 & a phone photo at 15:04.
    - I copied both to my computer at 15:05.

My photos' [exif] Date taken are preserved.
My photos' Date modified are preserved.
My photos' Date created are set to the moment of copying.
[I then use a script on them all to change the Date created to the same as Date modified because the moment of copying is not significant for me.]

I do all my copying by connecting the camera [my phone] to my computer by USB then copying them across using File explorer or by USB/WiFi using MyPhoneExplorer [which behaves the same way as far as those dates are concerned].
I have always done it this way, even when I had a [pre-smartphone] camera that installed a utility in Windows / Android to do the copying for me.
Perhaps this difference in the method used accounts for my experience being different.

Brian - Would you mind posting an equivalent of my diagram to make sure I do not misunderstand your situation again?

    All the best,
    Denis

I copied some photos I took with a digital camera back in 2001. I compared the date columns in File Explorer with that in an Exif viewer program. In File Explorer the dates and times in the Date and Date Taken columns match the Exif viewer Date & Time columns.

Date Modified is the time and date the photos were done. As for Exif data, it can be stripped from photos. Are you using any type of utility to see if the actual file retains any Exif data inside the photo file?

I like bro67's idea of maybe trying some other utilities to see what they might find, especially after just no reading this Wiki:

Most of the tools to view Exif data are online now. I haven't found any that I like.

However, the one like best is one I downloaded over 20 years ago. It is called EXIF Image Viewer. The original website and most other sites that hosted it are long gone. If anyone is interested I finally found a site that still hosts it.

EXIFtool has a command line, where you can bulk edit timestamps, using whatever EXIF header data is available. There's also a community forum with lots of friendly assistance.
