Whilst all the ones I had tried were useless, I did find one untried suggestion from 2014 annotated, "This one might actually be worth trying." I have now tried it and if it works for a month then I'll let you know.

I'm carrying on with my trial. It's only been a week and, in Refresh problem terms, that's nothing. I'll tell you about it at the end of the month if there is anything to tell.
Whilst Refresh problems have re-occurred on the Desktop a couple of times during the week, they have resolved themselves the next time anything changed [the next time I copied a file there, ...].
I have not needed to reboot daily. I've only rebooted if there has been any particular reason.
The results have come in early.
I just saved four files to the Desktop and none of them appeared until I pressed Refresh.
So that's it. Nothing I have ever tried does any good.
I'm going back to rebooting every day instead.

By the way, I suggested Refreshing by right-clicking & selecting Refresh. That's the method I find most convenient.
But dalchina was correct in saying that the same job is achieved by pressing F5 key [or Fn-F5 key, depending on your keyboard settings].

    All the best,
    Denis

Denis, thanks for all your efforts. When it does happen, I'm finding that the "refresh" approach is at least easy & acceptable under the circumstances, and I feel a little better to the extent that it looks like a Microsoft bug and not something more threatening.

    Dalcina, F5!
