How to solve this explorer.exe and msedge.exe problem?

Recently I have a problem that if I run Microsoft Edge (msedge.exe) while explorer.exe is running then the entire system becomes not responding and I must restart the entire system.

If I terminate explorer.exe with Windows Task Manager and then run Microsoft Edge (msedge.exe) then the system still works except all Universal Windows Apps which need explorer.exe in order to work including settings.

Why both explorer.exe and msedge.exe can't run simultaneously?

Hahaha I'm kidding; It's good to post in multiple different locations, since you get more people looking at your question, which gives the higher possibility to resolve your issue.

Anyone suggested the usual SFC command?
    • Try Option Three:
Run SFC Command in Windows 10

    DISM:
Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

Question: After you close explorer.exe and run MS Edge, it runs properly. While MS Edge is open, in Task Manager, Go to File -> Run new task, and type: explorer
    and press Enter.
Does MS Edge & the computer freeze? Assuming that the computer freezes, then go to Task Manager and end the explorer.exe task. Does the computer unfreeze?

I very appreciate your interest in my question!

After running msedge.exe without explorer.exe running if I run explorer.exe when msedge.exe is running then everything freeze including Windows Task Manager so I can't terminate explorer.exe.

In this situation I press the button that instantly restarts my computer.

This is the only way to escape this situation.

I tried both SFC and DISM commands as administrator with elevated command prompt but unfortunately, they didn't solve this problem at all.

I did notice recently that msedge.exe appears a lot in the "Image Name" column in the Processes tab in Windows Task Manager when running Microsoft Edge internet browser without explorer.exe

I have only one Microsoft Edge window so there should be only one msedge.exe but not so many.

    Am I wrong?

    But explorer.exe is always running.
explorer.exe is Windows - see, for example, Restart explorer.exe Process - TenForumsTutorials

I see. So the whole computer freezes where you cannot access the Task Manager.

Can you try something. Repeat the steps to make the computer freeze. Wait 20 seconds, then press the reset button on your computer. But right when your computer freezes, look at the time, exact to the second (let's say on your smartphone), to keep track of the exact time of when the computer freezes.

Then restart the computer (20 seconds later), and when the computer starts up, search for, and open: Event Viewer

Look at Windows Logs -> Application
    &
    Windows Logs -> System

Try looking at the most recent logs, or the logs that are soo very close to the exact time of the computer freeze. Maybe we can find something logged in there that shows what loads up, or something, which causes this handicap.

I have recently run into this problem and found out, that the issue is a lot of open tabs or edge windows, which I tend to not close to be able to go back to them whenever I have time to do that.

you can tune this up a little by changing the default limit (10000) to something higher.
    M-Files Customer Support Portal

I had it on 15000 for quite a while, but recently my edge got wild and now having it on 25000 is not enough. Well, it fixed the explorer/start menu issue, but edge showed just white windows and after a while the system was unusable. Task manager showed 97% of my 16GB memory used. I guess one needs more memory for 25000.

Now I am trying to find out which of the browsers tabs/windows is creating the GDI objects, which is quite difficult, because even the Browser task manager is not showing up properly for me now. But it may be possible for you.

In the end I had to set it to 30000 and after that I have been able to close some tabs via the Browser task manager and the system started to behave OK.
Windows task manager currently showing 122 msedge processes "eating" 4GB of my notebook memory. The whole system shows 70% of memory being used. The explorer process is having 25095 GDI objects.

I am curious how long it lasts with my bad habit leaving the edge windows/tabs open for later.
