    Need help restoring desktop settings

    Win 10 Pro

I have a childish coworker who decided that he liked messing with my desktop. So I created an admin account and locked down the desktop settings and changed my regular account to a standard user. All was fine for a while but evidently this was a challenge to his manhood and today when I came into work, my desktop was changed again. How he did it, I don't know.

Of course, things are locked down so I can't change them back. I made my account an admin again but still can't change things.

What's worse is that I can't recall how I locked things up in the first place.

    Any suggestions from the gurus?

Hy, you might have used 1 or more group policies - there are many possible ones, depending on what you were hoping to prevent the other person doing e.g.

As to restoring things to how they were: you may have a suitable System Restore point, if you've ever enabled it.
And tenforums members endlessly recommend the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging.
If you use disk imaging and have a recent one, you might consider making use of that.

If only you have access to the admin account and your colleague has a standard account, they should not be able to override group policy settings.

The PC has two accounts. Admin which I created and set the password and a generic standard user account with no password. I don't know how he got past the restrictions that I put on the account. If he has mad computer skills, he's wasting his time here delivering appliances.

Thank you for your reply. We seem no further forward with
    - how you set the restrictions
    - how you might enforce them in the future (I suggested group policy)
    - how you might recover.

Thanks for your help. Now that I look at things again, I did use the group policy editor to set the restrictions. I got everything back to the way that I want it.

I'm still wondering how he managed to change settings. Is it possible that he used regedit to change things? I have locked down regedit now as well.

He might have used the built-in admin account somehow... note.. by default, no password... so...

    - or maybe you used a hackable PIN or password..?

Learn something new everyday. I never knew that there was a built in/hidden administrator account. Just this morning, I was wondering if there was such a thing.

I set a new password for the Administrator account and I've changed the password for the visible Admin account to a 23 character password.

Reboot Restore Rx Freeware | Horizon DataSys Corporation Horizon DataSys Corporation

This would be probably the best app for you, just keep your work synced in the cloud like in onedrive.

Some Windows policies are a joke, you can lock the wallpaper, yet you can easily change it via the right click menu.

Even so, the colleague shouldn't have been able to change someone else's account...?

You could also ensure you have System Restore scheduled to create a restore point daily.
    Tutorial available.

    Hi,

I use desktopOK to reset the desktop icon locations. It will do it on system boot & snapshop on shutdown. You can also create a single snapshot just in case. Try it......
