Installing a Shortcut In the Start Menu

    Hi,

I'm trying to put a shortcut on the start menu (in the actual tiles, really - but either will do). However, it's not a simple shortcut.

I want the shortcut to open a particular web page in a specific browser, which is already in the menu as a simple shortcut. This original shortcut target is just "[web browser A]". However, I also want one in the start menu that is "[web browser A]" "[web page]", which I have created.

I've located the new shortcut in the folder "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", and executing the shortcut works fine from there. However, it doesn't seem to get into the start menu. Right clicking on the new shortcut shows only that I can 'unpin from Start', which seems to indicate that it thinks the new shortcut is the same as the old one that doesn't have the page link. Any ideas how I can get both shortcuts onto the start menu?

If you give the shortcuts different names they should both appear in the Start Menu.

    How have you named them?

Hint: This is very much easier using the much more flexible and configurable Open shell start menu (free) - which can be used as start menu editor if you don't wish to use it as a start menu - with it installed, Win 10's start menu is still available

    Thanks,

The original shortcut is named 'Google Chrome' and the new shortcut (in this case) is called 'Test Shortcut'. The original appears in the menu, but the new one doesn't.

Did you happen to make a copy of the original Short Cut, modify and re-name it?

I had a similar situation with the Start Menu when it ignored my copied Short Cut, and found that I had to create a new Short Cut from scratch on the desktop, for it to understand there were two.

    Matt,

You do not need either shortcut to be in the Programs folder. You can stick them anywhere & still be able to pin them to Start.

On the original one, select Unpin from Start and check you have been obeyed.
Reboot to give it a chance to tidy itself up. This shouldn't really be necessary.
If you had deleted the original one but still want it then copy & edit the new, full one now before you do any more pinning.

Make sure you have given them different names.
Now right-click on the original shortcut & select Pin to Start.
Now right-click on the new, full shortcut & select Pin to Start.

On this testing version I did, but I tried originally to do this at work and created a s/c from scratch. I just tried it that way, putting it on the desktop and got the same result. I entered the target as ' "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" "https://duckduckgo.com" ' naming the s/c 'Test Shortcut 2'. The s/c works but the right-click still says 'Unpin from Start'.

Try3 (sorry, can't seem to find a way to import a second quote)

The test, as described above, is on the desktop.

Unpinned the original, no problem. Tried pinning the new on, but all this did was to re-pin the original! - in this case G/Ch - with no selected page. Yet the s/c I tried to pin still works fine bringing up the selected web page. It appears that pinning a s/c to the Start only pins the opening app, not the adjacent parameters.

Mine work. They both open their target addresses with no problems at all.

But if you are going to be doing this a lot, you might be better off using a Taskbar toolbar. You can arrange them however you want & can include all kinds of shortcuts in them.

I tried creating two shortcuts as per the Technipages link in post #6.

I rt clicked each, clicked Pin to Start.

    They both work.

(They are also listed by Open Shell - and those work too).

I also use taskbar toolbars, nothing like as extensive as yours - but find that Microosoft Defender delays opening folders containing shortcuts to programs until it has checked each and every program (regardless of whether I am intending to run that program, as it doesn't know which I might select). The delay can be as much as 10 seconds, which is a right pain. Do you suffer from that?

I have tried setting exclusions with no benefit (they seem to be ignored). The delay does not occur on subsequent selections of that folder, until something resets it - a reboot will do, sometimes I have no idea what resets it.

BTW, I am still waiting to send you a PM re EaseUS !
