I don't get any thumbnail images for MPG files.

    Hi,

    21H2

I have a bunch of video files I downloaded from a service I subscribe to. Some are MPG and some are MP4. All the MP4 files show up in Windows Explorer just fine. However, none of the MPG files have a thumbnail. I also have these files synced to another computer, and that one doesn't show any thumbnails either.

I checked my computer and only found one other MPG file, and it also didn't have a thumbnail. I"m not sure if this is a Windows 10 thing or just something with these specific files.

Can anyone confirm if Windows 10 normally shows thumbnails for MPG files or not? If it normally does, does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with my computer or with these files?

    Thanks.

Hi, I've just converted a file to mpg, and it had a thumbnail originally, and still does as mpg.
You might, by way of an experiment, try converting one of those to a format that does show thumbnails.

With what prog. is mpg associated?

    You might try using Icaros...

Check the file association (Default app) for the faulty filetype. It should be associated with whatever your default MPG player is.

MPGs were set to Windows Video/Movies/whatever program. I changed it to VLC but all it did was change the icon to a cone. All the videos play just fine, it's just the thumbnails that don't work.

I used VLC to convert one of the MPGs to an MP4 and then it had a thumbnail like normal. I then used VLC to convert a different MP4 file to MPG and it also has a thumbnail. There must be something in the way that these files got encoded that makes the thumbnails not work. No idea what that would be though...

Update: Nevermind. As soon as a refreshed the screen, the thumbnail for the MPG file went away. I encoded it as MPEG1 with an MPEG2 codec or something like that in VLC. Hmm.

    Hi there

I once had problems with certain file extensions not displaying thumbnail previews.
BabelSoft Media Preview solved that for me and should fix your problem as well.

MediaPreview has always worked for me. Personally I disable thumbnails in explorer and use Files or Diffractor to browse videos.
