How to prevent pasting into folder?

If I want to copy/cut a file/folder (right click and copy/cut) then paste into another folder that has a lot of folders, how to prevent pasting into a folder? In the screenshot E: it is very hard to right click and paste without selecting/pasting into the existing folders inside E: because it is filled with a lot of folders.
Example if I have a file copied and I want to paste into E: (and not into any of the folders (data1/data2/data3...))

Right click on empty space to right of folder names.

Maximize the window, there should be plenty of open space at the bottom if clicking in the open space to the right doesn't work. You can also go to the toolbar at the top, go to the Home tab, click Paste.

You can also try changing the view e.g. to Details.
If you then click on any column to the right of a folder name you can paste, and file is copied into the parent folder.

Also consider making use of rt click, paste.

    Clue:
The file is only pasted into an existing folder if it is highlighted.

Example- I clicked where shown... the file name is NOT highlighted.

Sometimes I accidentally click on any text in any columns will cause the whole row to be selected (highlighted), how to unselect a selected row? So I can redo and right click on the empty area to the right of the folder name.

    Thank you for your reply.

Again, click on an empty space in that pane.

    You might find this useful:

    - so the whole row isn't selected.

I frequently right-click a drive or folder or subfolder in the Left panel and Paste, more assurance it goes where I want.

Ditto on that. Just paste into the top level folder in the left pane. (Right click it and select paste)

    Hello @comcom,

I know how frustrating supposedly easy things can sometimes turn out to be a nightmare. I always click in the empty space to right of the folder names. This is easiest as you can visually see immediately what you are doing.

    I hope this helps.
