No icons for desktop in explorer

This problem goes back a decade from what i see and maybe no solution??

In explorer,, my desktop icons/shortcuts do not appear in the "desktop folder" within the user account or PC. If i click on the very top, "desktop" with "show all folders view if effect, They appear. What gives,, If i want to operate out of just my user account or PC why don't they show?

If you right click Desktop as shown, and click Properties, Location tab, what path is shown to your desktop folder?

Is that the folder you're actually looking at?

If, for example, you open the Run box (Win key +R) and then type
No icons for desktop in explorer-1.jpg
into that, does file explorer then open and display your desktop items?

I've not experienced nor heard of this as a problem.

This pic is from windows 7,, the desktop link under user account (red circle) and the yellow highlighted desktop both shows desktop folders and shortcut.

In windows 10 the red circled desktop it is blank,, i have to use the desktop link highlighted in yellow

Looks to me like you are clicking:

    C:\Users\Desktop

    When you should be clicking:

    C:\Users\Chris\Desktop

Right click the empty desktop shortcut and choose "properties"

    What path is shown?

here is two picture,,, I am using show all folders.

first is the desktop and it shows all icons, trying to view properties takes me to the Background setting in windows.

No icons for desktop in explorer-all-icon.png

this one is "C:\Users\chris\Desktop" and it only shows 2 of the 10 shortcuts.

No icons for desktop in explorer-limited.png

Windows should not be this hard,,, I know I am not super bright but icons and desktop should not have to be figured out by the end user?

trying to view properties takes me to the Background setting in windows.
    I don't understand this.

Are you right clicking on Desktop, then scrolling down to/clicking on Properties? Or what?

Just like Properties of a folder or a file...

    Third time, I asked:
If, for example, you open the Run box (Win key +R) and then type
No icons for desktop in explorer-1.jpg
into that, does file explorer then open and display your desktop items?

Windows should not be this hard,,,
Either you've done something or something seems to have happened to your Windows installation.
At present, insufficient information. This looks strange:
No icons for desktop in explorer-1.jpg

    Try this:
    Open e.g. Wordpad

Press and hold SHIFT and right click Desktop in the navigation pane (left pane of file explorer).
Scroll down for /look for "Copy as path" in the menu that pops up.
    Click that.

Now paste (CTRL V) into Wordpad.

Repeat for any other instance of Desktop in file explorer.

    Report the result.

The top-level Desktop (that includes This PC, Network, etc. plus your folders and files) is a virtual folder consisting of filesystem content from both shell:Desktop and shell:Common Desktop as well as the virtual items like Control Panel and Libraries placed there via the registry. This folder is the root of the Shell Namepace. The relevant registry keys are:
    Code:
    [HKCU|HKLM]\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

The Desktop folder found under your UserProfile and in This PC is the actual filesytem folder for the user-specific content seen on the Desktop.

Here's the top-level Desktop grouped by FolderPath. Note that virtual items have a FolderPath value of Unspecified:

It is odd that 2 of the 10 short cuts show, If it was all or none it would make more sense.

I will reinstall 10 tonight. and start fresh
