All are grey'd out, and cannot be edited. My first thought was that the files were read only, but none show as such in the General tab. I could edit them last week, but now the check boxes are gone, and I cannot edit the metadata at all.

The above example is an .mp4 file. This is the case for all .mp4s on my system. The check boxes do not appear, and I cannot edit the properties or remove any of them at all. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to restore this functionality?
I searched online, and found many thread with people who had this same issue with Windows 10 version 1511. Are you running that version of Windows 10? Aside from that, I don't know how to fix that. Maybe someone else who can respond has a solution.
Hi, can confirm mine is ok (for an mp3 file & an mp4) and removal works:
Do you have a suitable System Restore point you could use?I could edit them last week, but now the check boxes are gone, and I cannot edit the metadata at all.
Or a recent disk image you can restore? (The routine use of disk imaging is endlessly recommended here).
These are basic ways to protect yourself, your data and your time, and give yourself more chance of a quick and easy recovery option without having to ask technical questions.
History: (so often omitted by posters)
Useful that you say you know this worked a week ago. Thanks.
What changed around that time?
- update/upgrade/ installation/uninstallation?
- the cat walked across the keyboard....?
- etc
If no SR point or disk image:
Please create a new user for test purposes.
Log in as that user.
Advise if you see the same problem.
If not, return to the original user but in Safe Mode.

The forum prompted you for your full build number (so we don't have to keep on asking- it's really boring).
Thanks.

Sorry for long delay, been away from this machine. Yes, problem still exists in both Safe Mode and for a new, test user.
Just to reiterate for clarity, in the File Properties, Details tab after selecting the link Remove Properties and Personal Information and then clicking the Remove the Following properties from this file radio button, the check boxes are not there. Neither can I edit any other property.
I have done a restore point to before it happened, run Tweaking.Com's Windows Repair Pro, both without effect.
Thanx for your patience and help.
By way of an experiment, make a copy of e.g. a folder of files whose properties you can't change onto another disk.
Then try to change the properties of those.

Unless you have a system image from before the problem developed, I'd suggest a Repair install as the next step
- Despite its name it is a repair procedure not an installation. Your installed applications & your own files should not be affected. Personally, I always do new backups before a Repair installation anyway.

Best of luck,

@Dirkmaster - try what I suggested first based on the link I cited, as that's quick and easy.
If no joy- either do what Try3 suggests, or wait for any other ideas.
