    Search crashes everytime clicked on

If I click on "Type here to search", it shows a grey window (like its trying to show what its supposed to), and it closes. This creates an error in event viewer which states searchapp.exe has crashed. I have attached pic (sorry from a camera) that shows this. Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Creating a new user has the same effect, cant search, and searchapp.exe crashes. (so its a global issue and not profile issue Im guessing?)

I have tried: dism, sfc, powershell scripts to reinstall cortana, chkdsk, regedit, rolling back updates, and all have not fixed the issue.

The version of Windows 10 is 19044.1766. Its a very basic (old) lenovo laptop with very little installed. It does only have 4 gb of ram.

Any other ideas? Im thinking of reinstalling windows 10 with an older version, but thats such a pita.

I have a feeling it was an update, but uninstalling updates hasnt helped. There are no recovery points that I can use, so I cant test that.

    Thanks

It's not update-related- not widely reported. Mine's that build- no issues. I don't think

I'm thinking of reinstalling windows 10 with an older version
witll help you on the basis of the version- of course a clean install should.

    - what tweaks have you applied?

    As you say
Creating a new user has the same effect, cant search, and searchapp.exe crashes.
and you have no disk images or restore points (the two basic ways of helping youself recover fairly painlessly from bad situations) you could of course try an in-place repair install which keeps all progs and data

    - tutorial available, short form instructions repeatedly posted on tenforums (4 lines in my posts).
