All entries in the "New" context menu have disappeared

For some reason, I don't have any entries in the "New" context menu anymore, I don't know what caused it. I've tried restoring default values in the registry, but it didn't help. Please help!

Hi, welcome to tenforums. Have you considered searching the huge and invaluable Tutorial tenforums section?

If you're not familiar with it, please have a look. Thsi is what I found for you for starters:

Add or Remove Default New Context Menu Items in Windows 10

    Hope that helps.

Note: it's possible to add New manu entries for almost everything, and to create a customised template file for the new file created, where relevant. E.g. one for each type of Office file type if you wished (doc, docx, rtf, slsx etc).

    @dalchina,

None of that worked. Registry restoration did nothing. New menu editor shows all the default entries, but they are missing anyway. ShellMenuNew doesn't show any entries at all. I didn't find any solution at the tutorial section.

Thank you very much indeed for your reply.

Try using a System Restore point created before this happened.

Or you can restore your system from a previously created disk image.

    Have you tried this tutorial?
Add or Remove New context menu in Windows 10

And you could perfom an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data - if the same is true in a new user account created for test purposes (it won't help if the problem is account specific).

    History:
    - what did you do or what happened before this problem occurred?

    Please post relevant screenshots thus:
All entries in the "New" context menu have disappeared-screenshot-.png

For example, what do you have here?

I don't have any Restore Points or disk images.

Yes, it removes or adds back the menu, but that doesn't affect my problem.
And you could perfom an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data
    How to do that?

    I don't know.

Again, thank you for your reply.

I realise that I've probably borrowed that location from what is used by Libre Office. The default otherwise should be
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Templates
    Sorry about that.

However, given you have no other means of recovery and we don't know what has happened to your system, so there could be other damage, I suggest you
    - check your disk (e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel)
    - if ok: check your file system and system files
(from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    if ok:
    sfc /scannow
    )
Then consider an in-place upgrade repair install as above.

You really need to consider how to protect yourself, your time and your PC and give yourself a means of recovery.
For example, what would you do if your disk failed irrecoverably?

This is why members here endlessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free or paid) + large enough external storage for iimage files.
I also have a restore point created on a schedule, daily. Tutorial available.
And I have a specific backup arrangement for some data that changes more often.

That's weird. I have no C:\Windows\ShellNew folder either, but "New" on my right click context menu... works.

    From desktop...
All entries in the "New" context menu have disappeared-image1.png

    From C:\ drive...
All entries in the "New" context menu have disappeared-image1.png

    From storage drive...

On my computers, that folder seems to have been created by Office 97 or 2007.

    All the best,

Ah.. I may have changed that location at some point when changing mine: I think that comes from Libre Office.

    Try
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Templates

Example of full instructions with registry key details and reference to the folder containing templates:
Add File Templates to the 'New' Menu in the Context Menu | Windows Forum

This could be used to help examine relevant data by way of comparison.

    Ah, I see.
The ShellNew folder must be created in the registry, first.
As per your link in post #9

Because I just searched C:\ and I have no ShellNew folder... anywhere.
