Help on purchasing new Windows PC

I have an older (11 years old) Dell, it came with Windows 7 but I upgraded to 10.
I really want a new PC, but am confused at all the different "specs" and what I actually need.
I do not want gaming or anything like that. Just a PC for the average person. I do alot of downloading, and need something that I can add my PhotoShop and Animation prgram to. Any advice would be great. Really do not want to go above $1,000 for anything. One more question I know if I keep my moniter it will save money, can I do that? I have a nice size screen. Thanks for reading. Sandie

I had the same issue, my Desktops and Notebooks are too old to Upgrade to Win11 so I got a new Dell Vostro 14" back in Oct. and a new Vostro Desktop in April, each had a total cost under $700 from Dell. The Notebook came with a 256GB NVMe drive and 8GB RAM. The Desktop came with 8GB RAM and 512GB drive but it will become my main computer so I upgrade to 16GB and added a 2TB storage drive. One old Desktop and one old Notebook are now running Linux Mint, the Notebook issue was with only 32GB drive and couldn't do the last 3 Version Upgrades.

Hi and welcome to Windows Ten Forums!

Is your monitor a Flat Panel LCD or CRT?

Probably best to go all new (if LCD is =< 20 inches) and invest a bit more to be at the higher end of the curve. Your ROI will be much better.
A 24-27 inch screen size would be great for your eyes.

    Check Costco and Dell online.

Post back with any additional questions.

A caveat, my Vostro desktop from April does not have the VGA port, the linked Inspiron doesn't show it either. I got a DisplayPort to VGA adapter [needed for my KVM Switch], quite inexpensive and works fine.

    Thanks Everyone

Thanks everyone who replied for your suggestions. I have had no problems with my Dell so I am going to go with the
newest Dell Inspiron whole set up. Have not heard much about Windows 11, but that is what I ordered.

If you can learn to build you own PC then you can select the best value for money components to meet your needs. There is of course no warranty on the overall system.

    Hi!
I'm absolutely familiar with Ghot's post.
you can probably save some extra money if you go more deeper into real specification and build a pc to meet your need.
that mean, in my country if we talk about a brand, we have to pay extra for the brand and after that comes in count the component cost.
So, I every time check what the big guys use in their setup and I check what would me cost the same or slightly different setup if I build it up "brick by brick".

Here is a spec I would recommend:
Cpu: stay on Intel i5 or higher, maybe you can also go to an older generation i5, you don't need the most up to date one.
Motherboar: depend on what CPU and RAM you use. I always check the compatibility documentation from the cpu and RAM before I decide to buy a mobo.
RAM: is very important, put as much as you can of RAM. 16G is a must have but if you can, go and put more inside.
SSD: is also a must have for the OS and put on this disk all the programs you use.
HDD: you can put almost everything over 1Tb for storage

And here some extra, how I do some task my way:
You mentioned you will use graphics and video editing software, the same as am I too.
Here is what I did to still use my old Intel i3 7th gen. cpu.
I have 16G RAM and put two ssd and a separated graphics card with 2G ram. The graphics card is also a maybe 10 year old one. But it was a gaming card at that time.

So, the first ssd is large enough to use it for the OS and speed up the application's I use frequently, like the video and picture editing software.
The second ssd which is a small 128Gb i use only for the photo and video editors, I set up in the app's to put all their temp and scratch files on that small ssd.
Every downloads are going to my storage hdd which is 3Tb.
Everything is running as a charm with win10, but I will go and update to win11 to check how it will work.

I hope you make average video and photo editing and no Hollywood movies...
