Doesn't seem network related: when it happened last time I put the system offline and the bug lasted ~1 hour then as usual everything went back to normal...

Are you able to try this when logged in to to a new user created for test purposes?

If you can find a case with your current build when it DOESN'T happen... but even given that, trying to resolve this under your existing user...hmm..

And of course you could check if it happens with a clean install on a spare disk..

Otherwise you may need to be lucky and find someone who's solved this... or surrender, use Open Shell as your start menu with its own search box... I never use Windows' search bar.

It seems recent changes in MS Edge integration had a benign effect on this gfx glitch as I can't reproduce it anymore (crossing fingers!)...

Trouble is MS keep fiddling and trying to do clever things here.
I prefer to use something that is plain, simple and just works.. oh, and takes up a whole lot less screen space...

Removing the chronology from the bar the bug still shows up We can consider it a sort of workaround.

Crossing fingers... since I do have a 2nd monitor UWQHD - 3440 x 1440 I sometimes switch to, this might be the case (have had this doubt already, once I noticed sometimes the grey area covers just the lower part of the search panel squeezing everything in the upper part, just like in the video at msg #8)

    July 26, 2022—KB5015878 (OS Builds 19042.1865, 19043.1865, and 19044.1865) Preview (microsoft.com)

    • Addresses an issue that affects the height of the Search box when you use multiple monitors that have different resolutions.

One night and the problem reappeared. No hope with the many obscure bugs of MS Windows

If it makes it unusable, suggest you turn to Open Shell start menu (free) - has its own configurable search box - you can choose whether you want any or all of:
    - internet search
    - programs search
    - Store apps search
    - file search (by content or not)
    - Settings search

It seems you can use the same syntax there e.g.
    ext:jpg

However I think I've just noticed a possible bug- clicking More results for that attempts to open file explorer, which closes after a second or so... - that after having used it for years... never tried that before!

Thank you for your kind support.
However is not a serious problem: clicking on the grey covered part it goes back to normal, moreover it's random and goes away randomly too (!). Just another of those strange MS Windows bugs we'll carry with us for a long time, I think.
