Do you remember at least one of the the filenames of the jpegs? (example: FileName.jpeg)

Do a search and see maybe the pictures got saved somewhere else other than on the Desktop.

They have obviously been saved somewhere, it is just a case of tracking them down.

[1] I know this sounds silly, but did you refresh the desktop or Restart?
[2] Have you got a relocated desktop?

You can try performing a search on your OS drive, and ANY other drives that you might have installed or attached using Explorer, or a third-party utility [ I can recommend one if needed ].

    I hope this helps.

Have you pressed F5 to check it's not just Refresh issue?
    - or right-click on a blank area of the Desktop & select Refresh

Where are they? What is the folder path showing in File explorer?
If it is the Desktop path then it's a Refresh issue.

    All the best,

Is your intention to have the image showing as your desktop background? If so, then you should right-click on it and select 'Set as desktop background'.

Not at all, if I see or receive a photo, I like to save it to my desktop for future use, just like i have icons there so I c/o to open, I want the pic where I find it handy.

Basically the Desktop is not a safe place to put files, I always use Shortcuts(links) to a Folder/File/Program.

It's safer as the Shortcut just points to the Folder/File/Program so if deleted for any reason you do not lose your files.

That is what Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) does. The Shortcut > Properties > Shortcut tab gives you the Location and indeed a link to the "real" Folder/File/Program.

Long winded maybe, but it is a safer option.
