    Thumbnails

Why, after rotating a photo from landscape format to portrait on my PC, does the thumbnail stay in landscape format even though the photo is now in portrait format?

In Windows 7 and previous Windows OS's, the thumbnail of photos rotated with the actual photo but in 10 the thumbnail does not rotate with the photo. How can I correct this?

Run disk cleanup to clear cache, so it rebuilds it in portrait view?

Thanks Bobby. Sounds like a plan. Will try this over the weekend when I'm home again.

It may not be a cache problem. I have the same problem when I am using Microsoft Office 2010 as my default photo viewer.

Before Windows 10, I used Office 2010 as my default photo viewer and I could rotate the thumbnail 90 degrees and the corresponding actual photo would also rotate 90 degrees. This made it easy to straighten up a bunch of photos without having to open each one by one. Now with Windows 10, when I use Office 2010 and rotate the thumbnail, the corresponding photo does not rotate - just the thumbnail. And if I have the photo open and rotate it and then save & close the photo, the corresponding thumbnail will not automatically rotate to match.

Since having the problem, I have tried rotating thumbnails and photos using Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 and happily it works in the way that Office 2010 used to (i.e. the thumbnails & photos stay locked into the same rotation). Do I have to abandon Office 2010 to keep my thumbnails & photos in sync?

    Hello,

I am having problems with thumbnail rotation orientation as well. Please refer to screenshots below.
    Thumbnails-2016-06-24.png

These photo started out with both correct and wrong orientations (suspected cause: orientation lock of the camera phone while taking landscape photos). However, after rotating them with the default windows 10 photo viewer, the thumbnail does not rotate correspondingly - some even rotated in the opposite direction. I ran Disk Cleanup and the .bat file to purge the thumbnail cache - didn't work.

However, this folder is synchronised with OneDrive: I tried rotating using the web interface of OneDrive for this particular folder:

I thought that would be the end of it, but no, the windows explorer interface for this folder is still the same, it's worth stressing that the individual photos when viewed with photo viewer is correctly orientated.

Another trick i tried was to download the entire folder from the web interface, and that too did not work. After decompressing the downloaded zip folder, much to my dismay, the thumbnail are all 180 flipped, but at least now everything is uniformly out of sync. Previously some were in portrait and some landscape.
