    Computer won't boot

A neighbor's HP ENVY Laptop model 17m-ce0013dx was shut down during a restore and I said I could reload windows 10 and get it back working. However, all attempts to boot from either a Linux live CD or a USB windows creation tool go unsuccessful. I can't get the computer to respond. All it gets me to is automatic repair, and all that gets me to is a shutdown command. What can I do?

Your friend committed an 'unforgivable' Microsoft sin. He's not the first, though.

About a year ago, a friend powered off his desktop computer during a lengthy Windows 10 version upgrade. As a techie, I spent over a day trying a million different ways to get it to boot, including removing the hard drive and putting new boot tracks on it. All my efforts failed.

The only solution was to reinstall Windows 'from scratch' and let it format the drive. Thankfully, the drive was still readable when installed in my computer (I have all drives in slider bays) and I was able to copy off his entire documents folder and extensive downloaded movie library before I put it back in his computer and started fresh.

Hopefully, your friends' laptop still has a 'clean reinstall' capability and it will reinstall windows from a partition on the hard drive. I suggest you download and look at the user instructions for that laptop to see how to get to that function.

My friend wasn't so lucky. There was no way to extract the Windows registration key from it unless it was the current boot drive/partition. So, I had to purchase another copy of Windows from Microsoft in order to get the key to register it.

Hopefully, you can go directly to the HP 'recovery' partition on that drive.

Somehow I got to the recovery option but that didn't work either, it just led to the shutdown option. Thank you for your reply.
