Yea I don't have that option showing....

that's it. I don't even see the hardware recognized by W10. I know it's there, it's been shown in the past, I just don't see it now.

I'm gonna try a few things, I can't really do much here cause it's a work computer. I'll try taking it out and putting it back in, maybe try finding it manually.

Heck, who knows, it may actually be broken, lol!

    thanks again,

You have it there; it is "Stereo Mix". Have you tried to right-click it and select "Enable"? If you can enable it, then you can set it as the default recording device. If you can't enable it, you might need new sound card drivers.

MaximRecoil, you were right on spot! Thank you so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated by my and the people that ask me for screen grabs!

You were right, I just had to set it as the default device and then I could use the Voice Recorder app that I assume is the new Sound Recorder program for Windows 10.

    Thanks again

I don't understand why my sound card is not listed when you make it show unlisted items.
as you can see, it just says "High definition Audio Device".

Try going to the Dell Support web page and navigate to the Drivers section. They have a small program you can download that will check your machine and get the needed drivers ready to download.

    Hope this helps...

    YES! That was the solution.

I was previously using Total Recorder to record all sounds on my laptop(from any source)
but it stopped working after loading Windows 10 and decided to try Audacity.

Thank You MaximRecoil for your persistence.

I don't know why this guy got banned, but he saved my butt tonight!

Okay, I asked about this on the Doom9 forum and found the solution. Go to Control Panel > Sound > Recording tab (you can also get there by right-clicking your volume icon in the system tray and selecting "Recording devices").

The option to use the sound chipset (AKA: "Stereo Mix") as a recording device is disabled and hidden by default (unlike in XP), so right-click in that window and select "Show Disabled Devices". This should bring up the "Stereo Mix" option. Then right click the Stereo Mix option and select "Enable". Now you can select it as the default recording device ...

... and any program you use to record sound should now directly record the sounds playing on your PC. And you can also right-click it, select "Properties", and adjust the recording levels on the "Levels" tab, which is a different way of doing it compared to XP, but it accomplishes the same thing.

Impossible to record sound with Line In on Windows 10.

I have been chasing this problem since August of 2016, I can get it to work for a little while and then the Line In goes into Mute. I have been using Line Out to drive Line In. This was working fine with Windows 7. Since I went to Windows 10 this has not worked properly. I think the designers have not thought these features out very well.
It looks like the Line In is over driven and shuts down. Maybe someone can suggest a external sound card with it's own software. I have already tried a Creative FX board and it didn't provide enough. It would be nice if Microsoft would provide a sound control panel that allowed everything to be set up from there. If I had to buy it I would consider it. They try to sell everything else. If anyone out there has a solution I would greatly appreciate it.
