Should I switch to win 8.1

    This is my laptop: https://support.hp.com/vn-en/document/c06458710

Laptop was delivered with win10, so I am using it. Although I dont have complaints, I wonder if switching to win8.1 will benefit in terms of performance for games etc., since it is lighter.

NO. It won't do any better with Windows 8.1

Actually, Win8.1 corrected some issues with the all-tile feature of Win8 which was pretty good with touchscreen machines but the Start menu wasn't. Win8.1 update corrected some of that which did help but Win10 is much better with the combination of the Start menu and some tiles. The question next to ask is whether it will run Win11 and due to its age the answer is probably not. But Win10 is still being supported until Microsoft's announced date of Oct. 14, 2025. I have some good ones in the same predicament.

Ya Oct 2025 is a long way off, things will happen.

I plugged my W7 drive in after sitting for more than 2 years and it only had 2 updates and it`s smokin fast

W10 will be good for a long time.

Funny you mentioned Win7, I just set up an older Dell with it and got the same result although for some odd reason Win7 and Dell have no NIC driver. But a USB 802.11n dongle works just fine. Also of interest IE10 and IE11 won't install, "missing some updates", but that's no big issue either.

No, it will not improve performance. I have been with Windows 8.1 before for a few years before switching to 10 3 years ago.

In fact, in Windows 8.1 I had crash issues with FIFA 18 on DX11 with my GTX 960 at 4K resolution I had crashes and stuttering (pauses) after 1 hour of play and crashes after 4 hours.

Switching to DirectX 12 resolved this issue and I can play it flawlessly at 4K maxed out without stutters and no crashes for 10 hours in a row.

Now I know this may seem irrelevant as this is just an exception with that particular game. But you don't get DX12 in 8.1 and DX12 can solve game performance issues with certain games like FIFA 18 for example. At least on 4K it was like that for me, dropping it to 2K resolution resolved crashes and stuttering on DX11. But DX12 solved it for me for 4K.

Plus if you've got 8GB RAM then Windows 10 is not an issue. If you had 4GB RAM then I might say 8.1 is worth it.

The only thing that 8.1 is better at is faster boot time few seconds earlier, no cortana, no telemetry, no bloatware. No gamebarpresencewriter.exe. But there's solutions for that.
If you have performance issues in games under Windows 10, this will solve your problem!

For example under 8.1, I didn't have stuttering in Pool Nation FX. But under 10, by default due to Xbox Game Bar this was causing issues. After following this guide to deactivate gamebarpresencewriter.exe my frame rates normalized and no longer stutter. Frame rates are now equal or higher than 8.1 in most of the games.

Thanks, I was looking for that but your link saved me some time which at my age is in a constant battle with remembering things. I'm a practitioner of the here-after, go into a room and look around, what am I here after.

I am not a gamer, but from what I read you likely need to add memory and insure your graphics card is the latest designed for gaming.
